The Paradise of Shelling in St George Island

Our beachfront home on the Gulf of Mexico is not a part of St. George Island, though it once was.  A hurricane years ago split the Island apart leaving St. George on the west end and Dog Island on the east only a narrow inlet separating the two.  The Paradise of Shelling with absolutely sugar fine white sand is located on a beach rated by The Island Magazine a few years back as one of the ten prettiest beaches in the world. Dog Island is not connected by road to the mainland. Making the trip over from Carrabelle, on a boat or ferry,is the first sign that you are in for something out of the ordinary.  This is not a place where you can play golf during the day, go to a bar at night, or run to the store for a six pack of beer.  There is not a single store on the Island.  It is your dreamed of paradise where you may find that you are the only one on the beach.  Please view the pictures of the house and its surroundings.

Our home is located on Dog Island which used to be part of St. George Island, but years ago was separated by a hurricane. It has the same beautiful sugary sand beaches as St. George, but is a totally different atmosphere and experience than St. George. The shelling is unbelievable, the beaches are as beautiful as anywhere in the world, but unlike St. George there is nothing commercial on the Island. There are no stores, no bars, no restaurants, and no connection to land except by boat or plane. You must take a charter boat for about 20 minutes to the Island for $75 each way, or land your airplane on the grass strip on the Island. There are only 100+ homes on the Island, only 13 full time residents. It is the private getaway that we all used to dream about where you may find yourself alone with your family on the beach day after day. To my knowledge it is the last of the quintessential old Florida getaways. It is an island where every year the huge sea turtles come to lay eggs, an island where crabs can still be caught with a net, where fishing is great from the beach, and where the phosphorous in the waves can be seen from the porch at night. Warning! You better really like and enjoy those you bring with you because you will only see a handful of people outside that group during the week. Approximately 90 % of the Island is owned by The Nature Conservancy and is a wildlife preserve.
There are emergency services available by helicopter from the Island through 911, and our home is next door to a physician who is a permanent resident on Dog Island. IF YOU ARE UP TO A REAL ADVENTURE IN AN UNBELIEVABLE SETTING, WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU AS OUR GUESTS.

We are in the process of changing our rental program to make absolutely certain that our home is as perfect as we can make it for our guests. We allow check in as early as you would like on Saturday morning, with check out on Friday at 1:30 p.m., making the rest of Friday available for preparation for the new guests. If you wanted to arrive at the Island early on Saturday, there are motel rooms available in Carrabelle for a reasonable charge where you could spend Friday night.


We have just completely renovated the kitchen (remember that you have to prepare all of your meals on Dog Island) with new cabinets, countertops, new range, cooktop and oven with a warming drawer, and have just installed a new washer and dryer downstairs., The new kitchen bar will easily seat 6 people for a full meal if you chose to be totally casual rather than sit at the table for a sit down dinner. Additionally we have direct TV and have added satellite internet service (no other rental on Dog Island has internet service) for an additional charge of $25 per week if you choose to use the internet. That internet charge would be included only if you wanted internet service while on the island. We have also acquired a 4 wheel drive 1980s GMC pick up truck, actually a camouflaged Army truck that is a veteren of the Iraq war which will allow you to use only the established roads on the island (IT IS ILLEGAL TO RIDE OUTSIDE THOSE ROADS OR ON THE BEACH). You should not use the truck except when needed as diesel fuel is very difficult to transport to the Island. The truck is primarily to be used only between the house and the dock for fishing and making your daily trash run to the trash facility just to the right as you enter Dog Island from the Ferry dock.
I can assure you that if you would like to spend the week on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and have that beach basically to yourself, you will have a memorable vacation.

A deposit of $200 is required to hold the reservation with 1/3 payable 90 days in advance 1/3 60 days in advance, and the remaining paid 30 days before arrival.  Cancellation prior to 60 days in advance will result in a full refund.  Cancellation prior to 30 days in advance will result in a refund of all monies except the $200 deposit, and cancellation less than 30 days in advance will result in forfeiture of entire payment with a refund of all monies except the deposit if the house is subsequently rented for the reserved time period. If there is an interruption during your stay by a hurricane or hurican warnings, you will be charged only for the time of your actual stay.
