"The Historic Balch Retreat on Hood Canal" is a historic Nantucket charmer, and was constructed by T.B. Balch in 1920 - one of the original founders of Brinnon. He strategically picked the finest waterfront for his personal residence where the Dosewallips Wildlife Estuary meets Hood Canal, on the widest portion of the Canal - a natural fjord, and MAJOR WILDLIFE DRAW! Watch and listen to the playful sea lions, otters, and their pups on the estuary, which is also teeming with Roosevelt elk a/k/a "The Brinnon Elk", majestic bald eagles that fly close in, gorgeous bird varieties, occasional whales, and many other species that come to feed at the estuary. While watching the constantly changing view at The Historic Balch Retreat, you may spot the Trident Navy sub's that practice next to the Estuary "shelf" in the middle of Hood Canal. All of this is in plain view, right in front of The Retreat. Enjoy attached steps to the beach from your large entertaining deck, and harvest plump, succulent shellfish and seafood. Explore the expansive shell laden beach filled with 29 acres of the finest oysters (former oyster farm). If you love fresh oysters......
FANTASTIC HIKES, OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK/FOREST, SUPERB KAYAKING/BOATING, and so much more. Come experience some of the most scenic hikes you can possibly imagine, and overlook most of the entire Puget Sound, Cascade, Mt. Rainier, and Seattle on nearby day hikes. Venture into world renowned Olympic National Park/Forest where scenic waterfalls abound. Kayak, canoe, boat, shrimp, fish or crab, right in front of The Retreat. For boaters, Pleasant Harbor Marina is less than 2 minutes. Go wine tasting and explore nearby quaint seaports, the very best ice cream you'll probably ever encounter, or soak in the soothing relaxation of your romantic Hood Canal paradise. The list is endless.
HISTORIC ROMANCE - PugetSoundRomance is our name on the web, and for a reason. The Historic Balch Retreat on Hood Canal is a honeymoon favorite! Indulge with a romantic toasty fire, (indoors or out - wood supplied), set against the waters edge, a relaxing indoor jetted spa, with superb Hood Canal view (the moonlight on the water is truly inspiring), and expansive master suite, with OPENING SKYLIGHTS, and king size pillow top bed. Another unique aspect is the cushioned leather double rocking chair for 2 (see photos) in front of the cozy, warm woodstove! Celebrate each other with so many appealing things to do together, or revel in total relaxation.
FOOD FOR THE SOUL - Come experience some of the sweetest, plumpest, and exceptionally large oysters from our acres of private tidelands, along with shrimp, crab, clams and mussels (in season). The perfection of our shellfish is due to the minerals coming out of the Dosewallips river. Shellfish thrive on it! For those that love to cook, their is a large 1920 open concept kitchen with original kitchen sink and built in drainboard. Well appointed kitchen offers mostly period design small appliances and all the modern amenities, complete with spice rack and fresh mint from your garden (summer and fall)!! There's even an outdoor crab boiler and deluxe gas grill.
PREFER NOT TO COOK? Esquire magazine’s #2 choice for “Best Bar in America” is just a two minute walk at the Geoduck Restaurant and Tavern. Additionally, The Half Way House Restaurant a couple of minutes away, is famous for superb home cooking and HOMEMADE Pies. For pizza lovers, Pleasant Harbor Marina one minute away, has made an art out of making mouth watering pizza, sandwiches, and summer barbeques.
LIMITED MOBILITY?? Our historic retreat is user friendly. Only 3 steps down from the parking area, and no stairs to deal with if staying on the main level, in the charming "blue room" bedroom. The main level provides a deluxe kitchen, 1920 style bathroom (with original shower ring tub), media room, dining, and living rooms. You'll love the covered view balcony off the "blue room" bedroom and living area, with patio heater, recliners, and the ultimate in views that is constantly changing! Very close to the water (rumored to be the closest in Jefferson County), so you can talk to your family with ease from the deck or balcony while they are on the beach, so you won't miss a thing (see reviews below)!!

CANINE GUESTS are part of the family, and most breeds are welcome (pet guest fee applies).
