vacation rental description

Experience Puget Sound's only historic beach vacation rental, one of a rare few in the entire Pacific NW, yet considerably closer to Seattle and Tacoma. An intimate and romantic getaway for singles, couples, and honeymooners, yet comfortably accommodates larger groups.  Convenient amount of bedrooms and bathrooms + a renowned panoramic spa master suite that is a guest favorite!

Step back in time to a magical combination of historic simple elegance with seafood/wildlife rich beach on the crystal clear waters of Hood Canal, near Olympic National Park/Forest! Closest side to Seattle. The Historic Balch Retreat on Hood Canal is located on the Dosewallips Wildlife Estuary, considered the most desireable part of Hood Canal for numerous reasons. The northern area of Hood Canal with considerably more oxygen in our waters produces some of the Pacific NW's best shellfish and seafood, and provides sweeping, unobstructed views that include Mt Rainier on the widest portion of Hood Canal North America's longest fjord.  Feast on mouth watering crab, shrimp, oysters, clams, and mussels (some varieties seasonal), + a mother of pearl shell laden beach. This is all part of the Dosewallips Wildlife Estuary, with a wide variety of beautiful, entertaining birds, and wildlife.

Please see base of listing if inquiring.

RAIN SHADOW positioning tends to provide more favorable weather than other areas of Dabob Bay and Hood Canal, away from convergence zones.

Near world renowned Olympic National Park and Forest on the closest side to Seattle (1.5 hrs). Cascading waterfalls, picturesque exploration trails, and FOREVER views of downtown Seattle, Mt Rainier, Mt. Baker, the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges, and most of Puget Sound, all in close proximity. Dosewallips State Park with scenic and historic nature trails (historic logging train track route) is a mere 3 min walk.

Historic simple elegance and Dosewallips Wildlife Estuary - this Nantucket charmer is in process of joining the National Historic Registry, and was constructed by T.B. Balch in 1920, one of the original founders of Brinnon. Located on the Dosewallips Wildlife Estuary, a MAJOR WILDLIFE DRAW and feeding ground! Observe bald and HUGE golden eagles, heron, geese, ducks, PLAYFUL sea lions with their pups, cute river otters, and occasional orca whales that frequent the waters in front of The Historic Balch Retreat. Our prized Roosevelt 'Brinnon Elk' herd visit the yard and grasses of the DW Wildlife Estuary to graze as well.

Trident submarines...Also unique to The Historic Balch Retreat is the interesting Trident Navy subs that practice next to the Estuary ''shelf'' in the middle of Hood Canal. Subs are accompanied by two navy vessels. One of the few places to view this unusual and interesting sight.

Canoe, kayak, boat, and sightseeing...tour the DW Wildlife Estuary in front of The Historic Balch Retreat, or venture beyond with the canoe that is provided. If bringing your boat for crabbing, fishing, or shrimping, there is a public boat launch at Pleasant Harbor Marina, less than 2 minutes away. Indulge in wine tasting, sampling at unique distilleries, or visit quaint, historic seaports, some with gorgeous Victorians and whale watching tours, or soak in the soothing relaxation of your romantic Hood Canal paradise. The list is virtually endless....

Romance abounds...Intimate and popular with couples and honeymooners. Indulge with a romantic toasty fire (indoors and out), a relaxing indoor PANORAMIC jetted spa with amazing Hood Canal view (the moonlight on the water is truly inspiring), and expansive master suite, with luxury pillow top king bed. Reconnect on the unique cushioned leather double rocking chair for 2 (see photos) in front of a cozy warm fire, or yesteryear rocking glider for 2 on your covered balcony while viewing the wildlife by day, or moonlit water at night. Celebrate each other with so many appealing things to do together, or revel in total relaxation.

The little extras...We provide natural and luxury soaps, shampoos, and lotions that are gentle on our guests, eco friendly, and cruelty free.  High powered zoom binoculars that bring wildlife and Trident sub activity up close and personal are supplied. We want you to feel as though you are staying at the home of a friend that enjoys the finer things.

Fire ring by the waters edge with considerable built in seating, hte fire ring is complimented with expanding roasting forks for s'mores, hot dog, or hobo dinner perfection. Oysters can be cooked in the shell on hot coals as well. A great place for stories around the campfire, and reconnecting for treasured memories.

Food for the soul - Come experience some of the sweetest, plumpest oysters you may ever eat from numerous acres of former premium oyster farm, along with clams, mussels, shrimp, and crab. The perfection of our seafood is due to the minerals and oxygen coming out of the Dosewallips River next to The Historic Balch Retreat on Hood Canal. Shellfish thrive on it! Clam rake, bucket, oyster knives, and oyster gloves are ready to help you prepare your fresh from the water feast!! To cook that wonderful seafood or favorite recipes, there is a gas grill on the deck for oysters cooked in the shell, or crab cooker and crab cracker for use during Crab Season (Nov/Dec). Well appointed chef's kitchen offers retro style small appliances, non toxic, non stick commercial saute/fry pans, and all the modern amenities, complete with spice racks, fresh mint from your garden (summer and fall), and luscious BLACKBERRIES on site July-Sept.

Magical winter getaway

Review submitted: January 15, 2014   Date of arrival: January 1, 2014

We spent two wonderful nights here and can't wait to come back. Awakening in the master suite to the winter sunrise across the canal was splendid. The home is well appointed and I felt like an invited guest. Everything was top quality and we never felt like we were getting the "rental equipment" while the good stuff was packed away. Sharp kitchen knives, a whole array of spices for cooking, comfy linens and abundant cookware, dishes and glassware. We were able to collect fresh oysters at low tide and enjoyed the many books and games on site. It was a very peaceful setting for us (2 parents and 3 teenagers and our dog). I especially appreciated the check-ins from Tori (by email) during our stay and the free wifi was a plus. Highly recommend this magical spot.

Owners response: It's nice to see guests noticing the quality touches that can be hard to find with every day vacation rentals, such as a yesteryear feather stuffed sofa, original leaded glass windows, hardware, and fixtures, plus many other quality and historic touches that add charm and ambiance. We definitely want those that stay to feel like a guest using a friends vacation home. Thanks for sharing! Sincerely, Tori and Wade

A gorgeous getaway on Hood Canal!

Review submitted: November 29, 2013   Date of arrival: November 24, 2013

This house is beautiful, comfortable and perfect for a group getaway. It's right on the water, with a balcony and deck that are ideal for sipping coffee in the sun and listening to the sea birds. The entire place was immaculate, and the kitchen had everything we needed to make a delicious dinner. The dining table was also great for after-dinner games! We stayed in the master suite, and the bed was really comfy. Waking up to the sun rising over the Hood Canal was amazing - we'll definitely be back!

Recommended for: adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet-friendly, sight seeing, romantic getaway

Owners response: Always a definite pleasure to see our guests discover the many wonders of The Historic Balch Retreat in nature's paradise, as we have. Morning tea/coffee while basking in the sun on the covered balcony, and taking in the wonder of the wildlife is certainly our version of heaven. Very sweet of you to let others know the treasured memories you have experienced, and the care taken to achieve this. Most Warmly, Tori

Dreams realized

Review submitted: November 5, 2013   Date of arrival: October 25, 2013

Having been in the hospitality business, it can be a curse or a blessing when putting on the 'tourist' cap. As with any experience, we look (without meaning to) for the finer things to be wrong (dust missed, toilets not totally cleaned, etc). I can tell you without hesitation that this was a stellar wkend from start to finish. All that is described in the houses description was spot on. The house was wonderful, and fully appointed to the extent where much of what I packed was unnecessary. The house was pristine, and our wkend was one that will remain in my memory as the gold standard. Tori (the owner) was a dream to work with-it was obvious that her highest priority was fulfilling our every needs. The best compliment I can make (and I was hard put to narrow it to one highlight), is that we didn't want to leave, and are already looking at our calendars for a return visit. So please, do yourselves a favor and visit this lovely home. You won't be disappointed. We loved not only the house, but the kindness and caring that Tori put into assuring that ours was an unforgettable experience."

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sight seeing, romantic getaway

Owners response: Thank you for pointing out aspects that travelers hold dear to their hearts, such as the low allergen environment/cleanliness factor, and providing the little extra's that you don't normally find in most vacation rentals. When guests are so terrific, one can't help but want to do everything possible to ensure a treasured experience. Your review was too kind. We hope to see you again soon! Tori and Wade Cole
