Vulcano Lodge is about as far away as you can get and still enjoy the comforts of gracious lodging, gourmet dining, and the delight of lush gardens and vibrant birdlife set against Lake Atitlan and its towering volcanoes. Accomodations include six double rooms, each with two twin beds, desk and chair, bedside stand with lamp, private bath and private patio. Rates for a single start at $37 USD per night including breakfast. For families or groups, we offer one room sleeping three people and one sleeping four people. Each room and all common areas are spotlessly clean, comfortable, graciously decorated, private, and secure. Our pride and joy is a wonderful, large, second-story suite with great views of the gardens, the lake and the volcanoes. The suite has two spacious bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with three single beds, a large living room with couch and chairs, as well as a charming dining room -- all with lots of windows. Wide French doors open from the living room to a very large covered terrace that provides lots of seating and comfortable hammocks to take in the beautiful view across the gardens to the lake and jagged, mountainous horizon beyond. Your hosts Terje and Monica Maeland came from similar country -- the fjords of Norway -- fourteen years ago and were captivated by Guatemala and the dream of building a fine guest home in this exotic, beautiful and tranquil corner of the world. Vulcano Lodge (situated in the tiny, remote village of El Jaibalito and accessible only by boat or trek) is a perfect blend of European style in combination with unmatched natural beauty, privacy, and comfort. Hungry? Vulcano Lodge can provide food that is superb and hygienically prepared using local, normally organic products (just let us know -- three meals each day or picnics packed to go, if you wish). Our long-standing staff provide excellent, friendly, informed service and a varied and delicious menu to accommodate guests' dietary needs and tastes. Vacation Rental AmenitiesVulcano Lodge is situated in the tiny, remote village of El Jaibalito, one of the smallest of the villages that line the shores of Lake Atitlan. Lake Atitlan and the villages nearby are places of stunning natural beauty and rich cultural history with something of interest for most every adventurous traveler or vacationer. El Jaibalito is about 20 minutes from Panajachel. Because it's accessible only by boat or a moderately challenging footpath, getting to Vulcano Lodge is somewhat of an adventure in itself, but basically simple. You have two options. First, get yourself to Panajachel and then, by "shark" boat from the Tzanjuyu dock, our town Jaibalito is only a twenty minute ride. Most visitors come on one of these boats and find it a fairly comfortable ride; be sure to confirm with the captain or a helper that your boat is going to Jaibalito. Or, foot travelers often take the lake-perimeter trail from Santa Cruz, an exciting forty-five minute hike along the cliff edge high over the lake with its volcanoes looming above. The view and the hike are spectacular, but probably should be avoided by those afraid of heights, unsteady on their feet, or unaccustomed to high-altitude exercise. Once in Jaibalito, just follow the signs to Vulcano Lodge. From our first sign overlooking the dock, you'll head uphill on the concrete walk several hundred yards and then turn to right when you see the second Vulcano Lodge sign. Keep going another fifty paces or so to just before the bridge and you've made it. Turn left into the hotel grounds. Work your way up the path through the coffee plants, banana trees, flowers, cacti, and diverse and beautiful gardens. In a few minutes, you will escape the foliage and find yourself in the welcoming arms of civilization as we know it at Vulcano Lodge. Activities and AttractionsAny number of tours and activities are available around the lake. For those who enjoy hiking, Terje has worked out a series of seven hikes (of varying degrees of difficulty) that are particularly interesting. For example, there is a trail the Mayans of Jaibalito have used to walk to the Solola market for centuries. Another from the village of San Jose Chacaya (sha-ka-ya), runs atop the crater rim then takes the hiker down a steep path to Volcano View Suite. The view is beyond belief! Good shoes required... Climbing the volcanoes is an inspiring experience, as can be SCUBA diving in Lake Atitlan or horseback riding in San Pedro or Santiago. And many guests enjoy a relaxing visit to the Hotspring Fuentes Georginas. Most visitors agree that a boat tour of the lake and surrounding villages is don't-miss experience; we can arrange boat trips with our trusted partners for groups, couples or the lone traveler to allow you to see exactly as much or as little as you want. Tours and hikes vary in price depending on where you want to go, how many people, etc. A variety of car, bicycle, and moto rental services are also available nearby; speak to Terje about your options. And, of course, there are market days in the villages surrounding El Jaibalito -- perhaps the most incredible cultural and colorful experience available to the visitor, even if shopping holds no attraction for you. Vacation Rental RatesLodging at Vulcano Lodge costs from $37 USD per night. For additional guests, a combination of adults and children, or for booking multiple rooms, get in touch for a rate. Also Email Terje or Monica about discounts for stays longer than two weeks. Rate does not include meals, tours, or fee-based activities, which we are happy to arrange separately.
