vacation rental description

This family camp is located on the west side of Cayuga Lake about 20 miles north of Ithaca off route 89. It is situated on a private acre of wooded lawn. It offers about 900 square feet of living space with a kitchen open to a living area with sleeper sofa, sun porch facing the lake, large screened in back porch, two bedrooms each with a full bed, and a bathroom with shower. It sleeps six but the large lawn also accommodates tenting. A large circular driveway can accommodate a boat and trailer and several cars. This is a great place for adults and children who enjoy camping and the outdoors, but prefer some modern conveniences.

cottage rental amenities

Inside, the kitchen includes full size refrigerator, stove with oven, microwave, toaster, coffee pot and water cooler. It comes equipped with dishes, glasses, cooking and eating utensils, pots and pans. Cleaning supplies and garbage removal are provided. Bedrooms include blankets and pillows. An inside gas stove is available for chilly nights. An overhead ceiling fan in the main living area and window fans provide comfort on warm nights. A television(no service) with dvd player is located in the sunroom. Outside, the large yard is both open and wooded, providing privacy with both shady and sunny areas. A picnic table, gas grill, fire pit and lawn chairs are available for outdoor enjoyment. Camp firewood is easily purchased nearby on Rte 89 for a few dollars. Access to the lake is across the road about a minute walk next door to the shared dock in front of O'Malley's Restaurant. The driveway to lawn and dock at the water's edge is a gentle downhill slope with easy access and no stairs. The dock area has a boat launch, and room for lounging, swimming, fishing or docking a boat. It extends into the lake with deep water, accommodating large boats. You may wish to bring folding chairs if you want to lounge on the dock.  A canoe and various life jackets are available for use at your own risk. If you have your own life jackets bring them.  If you have young children there is small area to the right of the boat hoist for wading and swimming, safely away from the main docking areas. Water shoes are recommended. The camp is a great place to bring your own kayaks, row boats or other watercraft.  Many people also enjoy biking along the country roads.

activities and attractions in Cayuga Lake Finger Lakes

The camp is located in the heart of wine country. It is part of the Cayuga Lake wine trail and in close proximity to Seneca Lake’s wineries. Several wineries are a few minutes away. Ithaca’s shopping, farmer’s market, and cultural events are a short commute. Taughannock State park is south about ten minutes away, with its beaches, wooded trails and beautiful walks along the waterfalls. Cayuga Lake State Park is about 15 minutes north and features a large park for children and places to eat. The Women's Rights National Historical Park is in Seneca Falls, about a half hour drive. Nearby Trumansburg offers stores, restaurants and cultural events, such as the yearly Grass Roots Festival. Rural in-season fresh produce is available  close by. Two restaurants are only a couple of minutes walk across the lawn.

traveler reviews for this cayuga lake cottage rental

Great location - Comfortably furnished

Meche (Bellerose, NY, USA)
Review submitted: September 10, 2012   Date of arrival: August 19, 2012

I spent the last two weeks of August there with my husband and two kids (both under 4 years of age).
It was great. We swam and canoed on Cayuga Lake, hosted BBQs with friends, enjoyed the restaurant next door as well as cooked at home. We found the place very comfortable. Everything we needed was there. I was on a work-related trip so my family enjoyed the place more than I did. But we are thinking of planning a future vacation there. The owner is a very nice, soft woman. The whole experience was very positive.

Recommended for: families with young children, families with teenagers, sight seeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway

Couple of issues with rental

Some One (Asheville, NC, USA)
Review submitted: September 3, 2012   Date of arrival: July 28, 2012

The description of this rental was not accurate.

Fact: The water is non-potable. This was not mentioned in the description. I would never have stayed knowing this. The owner says it "was due to the drought." This should have been mentioned in the email correspondence before I rented.

Fact: The shared dock is in such disrepair that lounging was not comfortable. The owner says it "was because the restaurant sharing the dock was adding boat slips." This should have been mentioned in the email correspondence before I rented.

Fact: The paddles for the canoe are only child-sized ones.

Fact: The sun porch does face the lake as described but it can't be seen. It's across the lawn and over the road and down an escarpment to the shore.

Fact: The window fans described as available for comfort on a warm night are filthy.

Fact: There are 2 restaurants within 2 minutes walk as described...but there is also auto traffic and patron noise late into the night that is not mentioned.

Fact: I did not get my deposit back because of 'hair all over the bathroom and coffee rings on the table' that took the owner 'hours to clean.' I would advise making arrangements with the owner to walk through the premises together to assess cleanliness upon leaving.

Owners response: Response to a negative review about the Ludwig family camp.

A disgruntled renter wrote a bad review when she found out she didn't deserve the $100 deposit back. Earlier, during her week stay, she seemed perfectly content.

FACT: She left the place dirty, as in, not in the same condition she found it. It is clearly stated in our literature that leaving the camp dirty results in losing the $100 deposit. She is the first renter who was denied a return.

Two other of her complaints need to be addressed. The first is about the non-potable water, which is defined as unsuitable for drinking or preparing food.
FACT: All of our guests are provided with a water cooler and unlimited fresh water for drinking and food related activities. The Ludwig Camp is scheduling work this fall that will eliminate any water problems for next year.

The second complaint is about the dock.
FACT: It is true that about 50 ft. of a u-shaped dock of a 200+ ft. is under construction. However, private boats dock there everyday and a water taxi stops there to provide transport to local wineries and restaurants. People fish, swim and lounge on the dock all summer.

We hope this clarifies the issues for future renters. The camp is not trying to deceive. Most people enjoy their time at our family camp. Best regards, Ludwig family.

What a wonderful cottage to spend a week. Wineries, restaurants and beautiful scenery are all within walking distance. Swimming and fishing just a few steps away. Very cozy and comfortable.
