activities and attractions in Snowmass Colorado
The four mountains that make up the Aspen/Snowmass Ski area and are covered by both the Ski pass and the free bus service; ... Aspen Mountain (AKA Ajax), Aspen Highlands (The locals favorite), Buttermilk (Home of the "X" Games) and mighty Snowmass. These four mountains offer a variety of ski-ing that will meet the needs of ski-ers be they 1st timers, extreme cliff jumpers, young children or old timers... It just does not get any better. Snowmobiling and dogsledding are also available if you wish a day off and shopping in Aspen does not grab your fancy. Weekly fireworks display that you can watch from your balcony.
In Summer, it is even better... Rent a bike in the village.. ride it down to Aspen, grab an ice cream then follow the river down valley to the Woody Creek Tavern for lunch... Put your bike on the free bus and ride it back up the hill to home, biking was never before this great! Don't fancy bycycling how about golf, hot air ballooning or a sail plane ride. The white water rafting is awsome, the Hiking spectacular, a picnic at the Grottos recommended. Dont miss the free weekly concert just outside your door that others come from all over to enjoy or the weekly rodeo and BBQ held at the lower Village lot.
Down valley there is the hot springs and therapeutic caves of Glenwood Springs and if you are into Fishing!!! The Frying Pan river is world famous for its monster trout.
The big news in the area is the discovery of a "Monster" cache of prehistoric beasts at the bottom of Snowmass Lake.. Last october (2010) Jesse Steele, while working his bulldozer to expand Ziegler Reservoir uncovered the bones of a juvenile Columbian mammoth!! Ever since then, the community of Snowmass Village has developed “mammoth” fever Soon after, the excavation went into full swing when Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS) scientists & their team of experts descended upon Snowmass and discovered more mammoths, mastodons, a Jefferson ground sloth, gigantic ice age bisons, a small deer and a salamander along with well-preserved plant matter, ancient insects and invertebrates revealing an exceptionally preserved Ice Age ecosystem. Apparently the cold and low oxygen content at the bottom of the lake preserved the animals in a mommy like conditiom. This is new news and current info is best found with a google search on the subject, but it is for sure yet another sight seeing spot in the area.
