Go Back Again and Again

melinda (santa rosa, ca usa)
Review submitted: October 29, 2011   Date of arrival: July 28, 2011

We have stayed in this delightful cottage once or twice a year for the past decade or so. It is our home away from home in the Monterey Bay area, and really, we think of it as ours! It features all you need to enjoy a comfortable vacation. There can't be a better view of Monterey Bay anywhere in the area. Have wine and hors d'oeuvres on the deck and watch the action on the bay, and you know life doesn't get better anywhere in the world.

Here's what we like to do, keeping in mind that we're in our early 70's.
--We get a sandwich at the deli on Preston (Italian name, you can't miss it) and go out to Point Lobos, south on Hwy 1 about 20 minutes away, for a picnic. (Warning: Their half sandwiches will feed two! It's an experience just being there, though, as they have seen it as their mission for decades to amply feed the young military folks stationed nearby, and their service and decor reflect that.)

--We go whale watching. Don't skip this. I repeat, don't skip this. Wear sunscreen.

--We go to the aquarium every two years or so. Not to be missed. Optimal times to avoid crowds, any time but summer. Be sure to catch the new puffin exhibit.

--We go to the wharf. That's automatic if you go whale-watching, as that's where it launches from. Best restaurant we've found there is Abalonetti's, where my husband has eaten every year for the past fifty years. He claims the dish he always orders (pasta with calamari) is the same as it was the first time he tasted it. The only difference is the price! Never mind, it's still a value. You don't cook calamari at home, right? Since you're probably going to be cooking some meals at the cottage, don't neglect to check out the fish at the Monterey Fish Company at the end of the pier. Some good values there too, and always fresh.

--Go to Carmel, walk on the beach, have lunch (one of our three favorite meals), shop, if you must.

--Go to Big Sur.

--Walk the path along the beach in Pacific Grove.

--To sum up, enjoy one of the most wonderful, beautiful places on our planet. If you can't do it here, you can't do it anywhere.

Great Location, Fabulous View

We spent a month at this wonderful property. So centrally located, minutes from all the attractions the area has to offer. The Aquarium is right down the street along Cannery Row. Fisherman's Wharf and Old Town are a short drive away and Pacific Grove with its Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary also is close. Easily get on the hightway for side trips to Carmel-By-The-Sea, Salinas with its John Steinbeck Center, and Moss Landing's funky shops and antiques. The property is charming with such a fantastic view that it's sometimes fun to just relax on the deck for the afternoon. All the conveniences of home are here - full kitchen, laundry in the basement, two bedroom and full bath. We loved having breakfast at the kitchen table with large windows overlooking the bay. I would highly recommend this property for all the above reasons, plus a wonderfully friendly owner whose easy communications made our stay so enjoyable.
