Awesome weekend!

Nancy E. (Winder, GA)
Review submitted: October 17, 2012   Date of arrival: October 12, 2012

We spent the weekend of 10/12-14 at The Bears Den and we were totally satisfied with this rental. Aside from the fact that there was an earthquake in the nearby vicinity and scared us half to death when we heard the loudest explosion at about midnight on Friday, we had no complaints! I have been a past renter of Karin so I knew that we could expect great accommodations, a very reasonable price and a wonderful time in Mineral Bluff. There was plenty of room for our party of 4, but if you had children, they would have their own space in the lower level. Very nice, cozy cabin, perfectly suited our needs. The view off the front porch was amazing, even though the color hasn't peaked for the leaves just yet. Thank you Karen for a fun, relaxing time at Bear's Den. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone and will definitely keep it in mind for future trips.

Quiet retreat

My girlfriends and I truly enjoyed the relaxing weekend at this cabin. The amenities far exceeded our expectations. The proximity to town was great. Although it rained the weekend we were there, we enjoyed sitting in the hot tub and resting. Following a tough battle with breast cancer, this retreat was needed. Karin was awesome and helped me before, during and after the trip. She is awesome.

Our only suggestion was having a television in the sitting area by the fireplace while we hang out upstairs in the kitchen.

Overall, I loved the cabin and cannot wait to re-book.

Nice but plenty of issues.

The place was fine, lots of space, but the grill was disgusting, rusted and warped and kept catching on fire. The owner promised to replace it or at least the grates before the season started and didn’t. The A/C unit in the basement flooded the carpets and we got yelled at for moving her couch out of harm’s way. We accidentally broke a moose knick knack and a toilet seat and reported them to her ASAP and offered to pay, and got yelled at for that after check out as if we had broken something high-end, which these were not (She claimed we said we broke a bear, not a moose, but I explained exactly what knick knack and exactly where it was - it got knocked down while trying to kill a wasp). the moose was made in China 10+ yrs ago and googling shows it was worth less than $20). We had to clean up beer cans and bottled from the previous tenant by the hot tub which their cleaning person missed. She also yelled at us about not folding the comforters because she apparently wasn’t planning to wash them and just put them back on after washing the sheets, which is gross. She blamed us for breaking chairs that were broken when we arrived that previously she attributed to a giant group of adults who rented the prior week, but after we checked out she blamed us. She even yelled at us about a mirror that was left face down in a bedroom - it was in the same spot we found it, just laid flat to keep away from children - yet she couldn't understand how it could possibly have ended up where it was. Maybe the giant group of adults prior to us knocked it down, but we certainly didn't, it was resting on the backside of the fireplace wall when we arrived, leaning on the wall. The house was nice but wouldn’t rent from them again if you paid me to.

Owners response: Please read other reviews!Since I had several calls from this guest during their stay, and I received an anxious phone call from my cleaning person when she arrived to clean, I decided to take the 2 hour drive to the cabin after this family vacated. I was shocked!! There was a broken item on the fireplace mantel in the gathering room. Every towel in the cabin, plus every spare comforter, blanket, sheet and available linen were piled all around the cabin. It looked like 30 college kids stayed there. Chairs were moved,2 door stops were pulled off the doors and found on the floor. The kitchen table was left with food pieces all over it. The wood blinds were messed up and tangled. Items that were on a shelf in the bedroom were moved and lying face down and a wall mirror over the shelf was off the wall and laying on the shelf.2 swivel chairs, that had no prior problems, were also broken, along with a toilet seat that was totally cracked.
The guest had called me several times to tell me they broke items, including the toilet seat, and a resin bear item(not a moose collectors item that was up high on top of a cabinet in the kitchen). They told me the 2 chairs had loose arms.( My cleaning person checks the cabin between each visit and said chairs & shelf items & mirror were fine prior to this guest).
When I arrived and saw additional broken items, plus a huge mess, I called to inquire about the issues. I never raised my voice, nor asked to be reimbursed for the damage done.I simply wanted to ask her about the issues. She specifically told me that they put the shelf items face down to keep their 5 year old from knocking them down. This shelf is at least 5' off the floor & on a wall with no furniture. I guess their 5 yr old is a bit active!
The air conditioner did freeze up because we had temperatures in the 100's for a week. When she called me about it, I had my HVAC repairman there the next day. It never stopped working, so they did not have to endure any discomfort. It just overflowed from the pan in mechanical room and made the carpet outside that room damp. I was certainly not negligent to have it immediately fixed. The grill has an iron grate (which may rust a bit) works perfectly and was clean!!We pride ourselves on a clean and beautifully decorated cabin. She knows I never once "yelled" at her. I guess she is insulted that I would dare call her to inquire about their inexcusable mess/damage.She does not have to worry about staying! She is not welcome!
