Vacation Rental Description

The Dome on Stuart Island is located on the main migration route for 
the southern Orca pods.  Watch them from the deck or along the shore, 
looking out across Haro Strait.  Porpoise and seals are year round  
residents in front of the house.  Orcas can swim by any day of the  
year, but are most common May through October. 
 
The orcas and salmon are here now, all 90 orcas have been regular visitors to the Dome in June.  The  
Dome is available for September, but book now.     
 
A summer visitor notes :    A pod swam  
by with breaching, tail lobbing and graceful breathing. During a  
three hour period, all 90 Southern residents paraded by and then came  
back by again.  I saw seals , porpoise, 
 eagles in the trees, several bucks with velvet antlers,  
lots of different birds and an otter who ate his lunch just below the  
Dome. 
Another visitor says, "I just returned home with my family after spending a week at the Dome.  I  
can't explain what a fantastic vacation we had.  Every day we watched orcas swim and breach about  
200 yards away.  Eagles flew overhead and deer were just outside our door.  It was so quiet and  
relaxing.  I look forward to returning as soon as I can.   
L pod has two new calves as of this fall. 
J pod has a new calf this spring, as does K pod. 
Spacious vaulted ceilings and a view of the ocean from most rooms in 
the house, remind you that the Dome is in a beautiful but remote 
location.  Wildlife is abundant, with Dall's porpoise, eagles,  
osprey,ravens, otter, deer, exotic sheep and seals  among the  
commonly seen animals.  
    
  
This is a three story, 2700 sq. ft. passive solar energy efficient 
home. Electricity is produced by solar panels and a windmill.  There  
is a generator for high energy needs.  This is a perfect way to  
experience life "off the grid".   
 
Stuart Island is not a ferry served island. 
The trip out to the Dome is included in a weekly rental. 
You can also charter a plane or boat to arrive on Stuart Island, or you  
can travel using your own boat. A mooring buoy may be available and  
the island has two well-protected harbors.  The owner is usually 
available for transportation. Some people kayak out to the Dome.  The Dome                           
is only five miles from Roche Harbor Resort.  The rocky coastline can be tricky,             
especially for the inexperienced.   
  
  
 
The Dome is comfortable, but there is a certain amount of dust and  
leaves, etc. since it is in the woods.  This wilderness retreat is  
not for clean freaks.  It is for those who want a wildlife adventure.

Vacation Rental Amenities

TV, VCR, Stereo, Microwave, Propane Stove, Refrigerator, Fully 
Equipped Kitchen, Linens provided. Washer, Woodstove, Wood cookstove, 
and a small BBQ. 
  
 
  A 12' aluminum skiff is usually available.

Activities and Attractions

  Hiking, Biking, Fishing, Clamming, Oyster picking, Diving,  
Boating,Watching wildlife. Hike to the Stuart Island School or to the 
lighthouse.  
  As one visitor said, "I want to be out amongst the wildlife but I  
don't want to sleep on the ground!"  This is perfect!  
  Kayaks can be rented at Roche Harbor.

Vacation Rental Rates

  Weekly Rental: $750 for four  or fewer.  $950 for five to seven.  $25. per person per day for  
larger groups. 
                      
Sometimes shorter stays are possible, but with a three day minimum.  Special lower rates  are  
offered occasionally.  Contact owner for details. 
 
**A refundable cleaning and damage deposit of $700 is required.      
  50% deposit required with reservations. Pets require an additional  
  fee.
