2 BR Condo on Lake MI on 2nd Floor in South Haven

Huge Disappointment!

I thought it would be beneficial to potential renters if I held off on writing my review until now. This seems to be the time of year when people are planning their summer vacations. This was our second year staying at the North Shore condos, but first in this particular unit. The condo complex itself is great for families. A very short walk to town, a heated pool for when you need a change from the beach and lastly a spacious deck to hang out and watch the sunset. The unit itself is a far cry from how it looks in the pictures. Within the first 10 minutes of stepping in the condo, I could see that it had not been cleaned:

Ketchup smeared on the stove

Dirty floors & carpets

The bathtub had clearly not been scrubbed nor had the floor been cleaned (as proven by the hair and used hair elastic on the floor)

Food in between the couch cushions

Dust everywhere

My kids were over the moon excited to be back in South Haven (and were oblivious to the dirty walls and peeling paint), so we chose to grin and bear it and make the best of the situation, knowing that we would not be spending too much time in the condo.

I completely understand that the cleaning crews are contracted out and sometimes things are overlooked or miscommunicated, but I think what was most disappointing was the lack of attention from the rental company. We brought the situation to the attention of our realtors and quickly received an apology with a promise to stop by and an offer to send the cleaning crew over. We had already taken care of cleaning the condo, so I turned the offer down. However, they did not stop by, although I did see their car (they have their real estate ad on their car) in the parking lot multiple times during the week.

All in all, it was a decent trip. Our kids had fun which was the main thing. If your looking for a place to stay in South Haven, definitely check out the North Shore condos, but steer clear of this condo. I've stayed at better hotels in Mexico during my spring break days.

Nasty Place

We were very disappointed with our rental property. We stayed less than 48 hours and then left. Outlined below are some of the many, many problems with the rental.


1. The bathroom was filthy:

a) Bottom of the bath tub was black. The black came off the bottom of the tub when we cleaned the bathroom with bleach wipes, so it clearly had not been cleaned well.

b) Old soap, old shampoo in the bathroom.

c) Multiple dirty old razors (which is an infection risk).

d) The old water damage everywhere was nasty.


2. Kitchen:

a) First plate that I removed from cupboard had dry food on it.

b) First knife that we used had old food on it.

b) Could not use skillet due to old dry food on it. Unable to clean skillet because it was so filthy.


3. Other problems:

a) Multiple extension cords and cables running through living area and bedroom.

b) Dirty blankets with hair on them.

c) Disgusting, stained pillows.

d) The window air conditioner is next to useless.

e) Nasty old tennis shoes and sandals in the bedroom.

f) Thick dust on top of furniture in the bedroom.


4. We tried to contact the rental property's representative as there was someone parked in our designated parking spot on the afternoon of our arrival. We knocked on this person's door multiple times. The TV was clearly on, but no one answered the door. He called us back 17 hours later and told us that he had missed our call because he was running errands.


We arrived at the rental just after 3:00PM on Saturday. We tried to make the best of it. We cleaned-up the bathroom, cleaned every dish we used, etc, etc... By noon today we had given up. The rental is just too dirty and nasty for us to make it livable for even a week. We were not even there for 48 hours. We worried about the safety and health of our little ones due to the general filth, multiple cords running through the rental, dirty razors, and dirty dishes.


We are not new to renting in Western Michigan. This is our third consecutive summer renting in South Haven, Michigan. We have also rented in Holland as well. This rental was worse than any other by a factor of five. Basically, this ruined my one week off for the summer. It took a lot of time and effort to get my family to South Haven for this week, and it was horrible.

North Shore Condo

Location, location, location. This location is worth the extra money. A clean pool within steps of a private beach. The condo was clean and well stocked with kitchen supplies, as well as rainy day games. It is also walking distance from downtown restaurants and shopping.

Recommended for: families with young children, families with teenagers
