Fun at Old Forge

Dan H (Chicago, Illinois)
Review submitted: July 24, 2012   Date of arrival: July 25, 2011

I never got bored at Summerplace, there was always something to do. You can take a walk through the woods, fish on the dock, walk to the beach, or go to Old Forge town and shop. Everything is close but the camp’s location, nestled in the woods, keeps it private and somewhat secluded. The inside of the camp is cozy and has an Adirondack feel to it. It was fun to explore all of the unique rooms and warm up by the fire place at night. Once we started looking around the camp we saw that there was enough beds and rooms for all six of us to sleep comfortably. I had a great time at Summerplace and hope to visit again!

Love SummerPlace!

This quaint cottage is just down the path from the boat livery and looks out over Old Forge Pond. It's only a short distance into the town of Old Forge.. close enough that you can walk the lake path there in short order. The house is very comfortable and full of character with interesting carvings and relics from the family that has owned it for quite a few generations I hear (5? 6?..). We have four kids and a dog and were perfectly set up. The kids really liked the bunk room... kind of like going off to camp, only comfortable. Oh, and there's a brand new washer/dryer! Yay! There were lots of pots and pans, utensils and kitchen tools too. They were all pretty well used, but that kind of added to the charm.

The old stone fireplace is beautiful and really nice on a cool night. Popcorn, tea, and jigsaw puzzles by a crackling fire ~ so nice! There were ducks, and deer every day/evening. One deer even joined us for dinner at the picnic table! The kids fed it.. it seemed to like marshmallows best. Sunset from the dock was spectacular. We had cocktail hour at dusk each night out there. Our dog liked it too! We didn't encounter any bears but we were careful not to leave him outside unattended anyway.

There is a lot to do in the area... The kids especially enjoyed the Enchanted Forest Water Park with all the rides, slides and the lazy river. They even had rides that my 2 year old could handle! It was great! The shopping was good too and it was fun to stroll around town. The hardware store is a must-see. We bought a little log cabin bird house there that reminds us of our visit. The old movie theater is unique and worth at least walking into the lobby (first run movies). Very cool. Nick's Lake is a good place for a picnic and swimming; drive down South Shore Road to see deer, and get an ice cream in Inlet. Plenty of boats to rent for half a day or longer; fishing is good they say though we didn't do any except off the dock. We heard about inexpensive sight seeing flights you can take and horse back riding but we never got around to it. Oh, and there are lake side concerts in the summer time too. We caught a fun one and the kids got to dance and play in front of the stage. So cute!

It is very relaxing to just hang around the cottage too, if you're in a quiet mood. Bring a good book, cuz there's a comfy chair by the big window perfect for reading.

All in all, this was one of the most enjoyable weeks my family has spent together. We will be back!

Recommended for: families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet-friendly, romantic getaway

Owners response: We are proud of our little place on the pond...and so happy that you and your family had such a wonderful time.
