traveler reviews for this carmel valley house rental

Really, really wonderful!

Review submitted: June 19, 2014   Date of arrival: June 7, 2014

We found this place for my father's 90th birthday celebration and had two families staying there. The ages ranged from 10 to 90, and everyone was very comfortable and pleased. It is absolutely beautiful! The grounds and landscaping are better than any other rental we've stayed in - really taken care of. The whole house seems very taken care of, and thoughtful things were done for our arrival - fresh flowers etc. - which were lovely touches. The pool and hot tub were clean and perfect temperatures. The kitchen had everything we needed to make meals for 9 people, and the bedrooms and bathrooms were stocked with nice linens. I can't say enough good things about this place - it was much more than we'd hoped for, and really made our birthday celebration special! My 90 year old father has some disabilities, and this house is very wheelchair accommodating. HIGHLY recommended!

Beautiful, private location in Carmel Valley

Review submitted: June 11, 2013   Date of arrival: May 10, 2013

Our family has come back to the Carmel Valley Retreat many times in the
last several years, to visit with our parents who lived at a nearby retirement community. After our first visit, we looked at no other location in this area. The Retreat is perfect for our needs, and the property, including a guest house, easily accommodated 5 adults, 3 with spouses. It is well maintained, and on our most recent visit in May of 2013 we enjoyed the benefit of several improvements and updates. The kitchen is completely furnished, and the large refectory table in the dining room is perfect for large and festive meals! The outdoor area around the pool includes a beautiful deck with seating areas, a new free standing pergola, and a separate hot tub area. The grounds enable a group of this size to have private OR gathering space and there is a wonderful coffee shop/bakery in the nearby Carmel Valley Village which can provide fabulous pastries to go with morning coffee out by the pool. There is a fireplace in the living room to take off the chill in the evening. The owners provide excellent customer service, from initial booking through arrival, departure, and timely deposit return. Instructions and information are provided to make your stay enjoyable and free of stress .
The location in the valley does not get the early fog nearer the ocean, but it is only a short drive to the attractions of Carmel and Monterey. We like to relax, hike, bike, go to Point Lobos, shop a little, and occasionally go to one of the fine restaurants in the area. There are many, and some are nearby.
I would recommend this property for families, or more than one family, a girl's getaway, couples who vacation together, and more. We definitely plan to return!

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sight seeing

Owners response: We are delighted that you have returned year after year, sometimes even twice a year. We still have that great Christmas card photo of your family in our dining room that you sent us last year. It gives me the sense of having an extended family!

Nice house but some bugs and weird cleaning policy

Review submitted: July 18, 2011   Date of arrival: July 7, 2011

This is a nice house in a quiet neighorhood with a great pool. We stayed there for 3 days with 10 people and enjoyed it overall.

A small minus point was the hot tub which is a bit small and there is no light around it in the evening.

A bigger minus point was that we found many dead pill bugs in the guest house after arrival together with 5 spider nets (occupied by living and dead spiders). Sadly, after vacuuming, the pill bugs returned very quickly. This was both annoying and we were afraid to put our stuff on the ground.

Renters should also very carefully read the contract! The landlord expects you to do some part of the cleaning that goes beyond what I think is appropriate (such as putting the all the furniture in place and starting the dish washer). Specifically, you have to put all towels and bedlines to the washroom and do part of the laundry! If you fail to do that (as we did), part your security deposit will be withheld.

Owners response: We are certainly sorry about the pill bugs and spiders. We have already plugged the holes where they were getting in. Thanks for the heads up. We typically vacuum before each guest arrives.

As to the check-out responsibilities, yes, please read the contract carefully and follow the procedures you agree to by signing. We ask that you bring all bedding and towels to the laundry room, do one load of wash, load the dishwasher and start it, and put back any furniture that you have moved. This allows us to get another guest in on the same day.

We strive to make the Carmel Valley Retreat a wonderful place to stay. We enjoy working to keep it equipped, clean, peaceful and comfortable. We ask that guests follow the few rules we put in the contract. Our cleaning fee is included in the rent. We rarely hold back money except when things are damaged or the cleaning exceeds the allotted time we have come to expect over the last 10 years.
