vacation rental description

Area Description:
This charming Saltbox Style Cottage is located in a small out port called Bauline. Bauline is located at the base of a 1000-foot high mountain where publicly groomed trails will lead you to the summit. This quaint and very clean, ocean front century home has a lovely western view of ConceptionBay and the village's lobster/crab fishing port. Sunsets in Bauline are spectacular, especially while sipping on a cocktail on your own private, 300 square foot patio. Beside the property is a babbling brook that will serenade you to blissful slumber.

Definition: An East Coast term used to describe the style of thisNewfoundlandhome. Originally built in 1892, we have carefully renovated our Saltbox to accommodate modern amenities however; we have attempted to keep a lot of the original character. Notice the stairs leading to the second floor are worn by over 100 years of traffic.

activities and attractions in St John's Newfoundland

In Bauline  There are many fun, beautiful and interesting things to do inNewfoundland.  We have listed some local things to do within walking distance from the Saltbox and some very useful suggestions forSt. John’sand the surrounding area.  You will see that the city ofSt. John’sis very rich in culture, history, arts and entertainment.

Iceburg & Whale  Watching  Right from your own private deck!!  You can kick back on a lounge chair, sip on a glass of wine and watch as Iceburgs and whales pass by.  They are in abundance during the months of July and early August especially.

Fresh Water Swimming Hole  Located 2 km up the road with a sandy beach and picnic tables…great for the whole family.  The water is very clean and great to enjoy a day of swimming in.

Fishing  For all of you fishing fanatics, make sure you bring your gear. Talk to the locals about the fantastic fishing opportunities, they are only too happy to help.  You can fish for some tasty “brown trout” in the fishing hole just up the street and catch your evening meal.  Or, cast a line off of the rocky point at the little harbor, just a stones throw away and catch some interesting ocean treats…..

Hiking  Take an invigorating walk to the summit of a 1000-foot high mountain right behind you, this is where the picture was taken of the arial shot of Bauline (picture section).  There are trails that will lead you to the top but please keep in mind that the path can be quite treacherous at times, it is a great cardio workout for you fitness enthusiasts and please be sure to bring lots of water and perhaps even a light snack to sit and enjoy the view. The hike takes approximately 3 hours up and down. Ask the villagers for directions.

Enjoy the local Fishing Community  Bauline is a small, very active fishing village with many of the residence relying heavily on the daily catch to support their livelihood.  Throughout the year, if you time it right, you can enjoy different ocean delicacies that are in season such as crab, lobster, squid, and if you are lucky, perhaps some other fresh “catch of the day”.

The local Fishermen are a very friendly bunch, strike up a conversation and share in some interesting, entertaining stories.

Running, Walking and Fitness  For many of our running-enthusiast friends and family, we challenge you to take the “Bauline Line” hill challenge!  It is the road that you take to the Saltbox which doesn’t seem too steep when you are driving down but wait until you start walking / running up!!!  It is a great challenge for anyone looking for that extra “shock” to the system.  For those of you who would like to enjoy this walk at a more leisurely pace, please make sure to bring water and don’t push it too hard.  You will see we also have a light bar bell weight set and fitness videos in the living room, please feel free to use them.

BerryPicking  Bauline has a 1000 foot mountain that surrounds our tiny village and at the base of this mountain, there are beautiful fields full of assorted berries that are 100% edible.  Each fall Rob and Francine go out with a couple large buckets and collect the ripe tasty morsels.  We don’t bake much but we get the “baking bug” in the fall and make amazing, berry filled pies.  If you are lucky, we may have one left in our freezer for you to try…

Hikers will quickly notice the wide variety of berries. Cranberries, Bakeapples, Blueberries and Partridgeberries are abundant and have traditionally made up an important part of theNewfoundlanddiet. A day in the fields spent berry picking is the precursor to another in the kitchen preparing pies, jams, jellies and bottles of fruit for the winter.

Whale, Bird & Iceberg Watching Tours  There are many boat tour operators inNewfoundlandoffering services similar to the trip that we enjoyed. For more information, you can call:

traveler reviews for this st john's house rental

Many pluses to this location.

Review submitted: August 9, 2014   Date of arrival: July 26, 2014

There were four adults in our group and we frequently commented about what a wonderful location the saltbox was. Close to St. Johns, but in a cute fishing village. Many, many things to do in a reasonable driving distance, and the owners have furnished the home with large format television, sound system with huge selection of music, plus a nice library of books and movies. Sit on the deck watching whales, sipping wine, listening to Newfoundland Sounds. What a treat! Though close to the "big city" of St. Johns, we found the locals as engaging and friendly as in other parts of Newfoundland.

A piece of heaven

Review submitted: July 7, 2014   Date of arrival: June 21, 2014

The cottage far exceeded our expectations with every amenity necessary. Your property manager, Desmond, was helpful and delivered us losters one evening on request. Bauline is a lovely, quiet village and our deck views of whales and icebergs were awesome. We enjoyed the short drive into St. John`s and many day trips around Avalon. The O`Brien`s whale and puffin watching boat trip was a highlight. We`ve already recommended the property as it was through friends having stayed there in the past who told us about your cottage. We`d love to return in the future.

A very well equipped and spacious rental property

Review submitted: July 4, 2014   Date of arrival: June 28, 2014

Our week at your Salt Box was a Grand Finale to our trip to Newfoundland. The home is comfortable, cozy and all that one would want to get the true Newfoundland experience. It has a marvellous deck overlooking the ocean and is fully equipped for your stay including and excellent BBQ. The highlight was the Canada Day celebration on the Bauline wharf with fantastic music, delicious mussels and fireworks from our deck. This home is ideally situated to access many of the
must see sights in the Avalon peninsula.
