activities and attractions in Puerto Rico Caribbean

The complex where the apartment is located offers several opportunities for entertainment.  In addition to the two pools, there is a tennis court and a half basketball court, plus a playground and a kiddie pool for the younger ones.  Also, there is a mile long beach, right across the street from the complex

The beaches in Maunabo are among the most pristine in the Island.  In addition to the Punta Tuna beach, closest to the complex, there are two more excellent  beaches in Maunabo, great for sunbathing, swimming, beachcoming, pier fishing and snorkeling.  Within a 20 minute drive, going either north or south, there are several other beaches, plus opportunities for deepsea fishing, sailing, scuba diving and windsurfing. The area around Maunabo is excellent for ecotourism, scenic drives, hiking, biking and birdwatching.

No visit to Puerto Rico is complete without a tour of Old San Juan, a walled Spanish city dating to the 1500’s and still a vibrant living and working space, or to El Yunque Rainforest, the only forest of its kind within the US Park Service system.  Both are within an hour’s drive from the unit.

There are several restaurants in Maunabo, most serving good, fresh, simple fare.  Further afield are numerous restaurants which are weekend destinations for the San Juan crowd.  There is a binder in the apartment with information about places to eat.

Keep your expectations reasonable and enjoy...

Review submitted: January 14, 2014   Date of arrival: December 27, 2013

Our 6-day vacation to Puerto Rico was very enjoyable. Lots of great outdoor activities and a variety of good food, everything from local flavors available at the many kioskos to fine seafood dining at picturesque beachside restaurants.
Specifically concerning our villa, I feel like I need to give a good description so people will know what to expect. As you can see, our "overall experience" was a 4-star rating. The grounds are nice, the pools are great, everything is clean and the 24-hour security is a nice bonus. We have stayed at many beachfront properties and I would have to say this was our best view ever. On one side, there are mountains in the near distance that roll down to the sea and on the other is a beautiful seaside lighthouse that sits on a bluff. Just about your entire view is ocean! It's true, you will be about 25 minutes from "American style" shopping and 45 minutes from most "things to do", but for us this turned out to be a good thing as it let us experience more of Puerto Rico as it truly is (as opposed to Old San Juan, which is great but very touristy) We enjoyed our drives to and from our destinations and saw many interesting things we would have otherwise missed.
OK, now...the unit itself is definitely NOT 4-star. To us, once we accepted that (after the first hour or so), it was not much of a negative at all. The unit is very large. The lack of A/C is not much of a factor as there is constantly a great breeze coming through (we were there when the highs were in the low to mid-80s, lows at night in the mid-70s). The unit is, however, quite stark. There are very few decorative touches, there are a few nicks and bumps on the walls that could use a fresh coat of paint, the doors throughout are aging and the master bath has a large stain in the tub. Now mind you, the unit IS's just that it is aging and could use a little freshening up. The kitchen is adequate but also very simple. This is all coming from the perspective of fairly frequent travelers who regularly stay at pretty nice places in the States.
I would definitely recommend this place to people who are reasonable and understanding of what they are getting. You are paying $100/night to stay in a very large unit with the best views you could ask for. Do go, but do not go expecting to be staying in the lap of luxury.
Lastly...Upon arrival, follow directions is a haul from the airport, longer than we thought...but you'll make it. Enjoy.
