Exotic, Mystical, Sensual
Kentucky Mountain Coffee Estate: Jamaica’s Newest Treasure
This recently completed 10-acre coffee plantation offers a slice of paradise you won’t find anywhere else. It’s a chance to ditch the tourists, put your feet up, relax and see the real Jamaica. The Mountain serves up memories that will last a lifetime.
2500 feet above sea level the house with its wrap around veranda ensures uninterrupted access to spectacular views. Follow the suns path from watercolor sunrises to breathtaking sunsets. Stake out a hammock for a vivid view of the moon and stars against a velvet sky.
There are three houses located on the estate. The Big House offers 3 bedrooms and sleeps up to eight. Ozzie’s cabin is a rustic two bedroom retreat with a wrap around veranda and a detached bathroom / laundry facility. There is a double bed in each room. Mike’s Place (The Little House will be available in 2011) will offer two bedrooms with an in-house bath and sleeps six.
The Big House was built using old Jamaican building techniques, prompting locals to walk up the mountain for a trip back in time. Every rock you see in the house and terraces was found locally and carried up the mountain, often atop workers heads. Once on top, each rock was hand hewn and carefully placed to make the 18” thick walls. The cedar used for the floors, shutters, furniture and trim was cut and planked locally. All of the millwork was done onsite and most of the furniture was built for the house by local craftsman. (it was still being built when these photos were taken). Much of the Artwork in the house comes out of Jamaica’s rich arts and crafts tradition.
The Big House is situated to take advantage of the ever-present trade winds. Covered verandas and wide doors let you follow the shade and the gentle breeze day and night. No Air conditioning is needed. Ceiling fans in each room keep the house comfortable. Temperatures on the mountain are typically about 10-15 degrees cooler than those below.
