Mark Barbanell, Owner of River Estate (riverestate com)

There are two homes at River Estate (One 2 bedroom 2 bath called the Guest House and one 3 bedroom 2 bath called the Riverhouse) Both homes are on the estate grounds next to the river in the same proximity to the water yet far apart. Visit our official website (link at the bottom of the page) for links to our media reviews and to view both calendars .

On February, 10th, 2011 River Estate was named as one of 12 Romantic Getaways across the US in a LonleyPlanet website article published for Valentine's Day by one of their staff writers. River Estate was also named as one of the 10 most romantic properties in Hawaii by the well known and prestigious Gayot Travel Guide in 2009 ('The Guide to the Good Life') which was established in 1981 by Andre Gayot who invented the term Nouvelle Cuisine and has been directing travelers to the world's best restaurants, hotels, shops, sightseeing and cultural attractions since well before he published his first guidebook. River Estate has been featured in National Geographic Adventure Magazine in Feb. 2006 and the L.A. Times Online Travel Magazine Blog as well as Fodor's and Lonely Planet's Kauai travel guides. River Estate has wonderful reviews on TripAdvisor, VRBO, Yahoo Travel, Virtual Tourist and FlipKey. We offer our guests the ultimate in comfort in our meticulously maintained accommodations, extreme privacy in the wonderful natural environment provided by our riverfront gardens and one of the best locations on Kauai. Bar none.

Riverhouse - Great house for a family! We had young children to entertain so we explored many close by beaches! We loved Ke'e beach at the end of the road especially. We hired a kayak and stand up paddle board and ventured down the river to the closest beach right from the house too! My husband is a surfer and Mark told us about a great surf spot and beach for the family. As we were late in the year for a north shore departure Napali Coast boat trip we opted for a helicopter ride. Kauai is absolutely spectacular from the air too! Thanks Mark for all you did to make our trip the best ever.

Riverhouse - What a lovely retreat! Thanks so much for everything. We echo our compatriots who ventured along with us.
The Kessler Family, Kailua Kona, Hi (1/17/13)

Guest House - Whether rain or shine we'll always cherish our own little Bali Hai! Couldn't have been better. Thanks Mark.

Peace, privacy and comfort is what you'll find here at River Estate. Staying here just might be one of the finest vacation experiences you'll ever have. The idyllic riverfront gardens are perfectly complimented by the two charming homes. Our onsite staff as well as the owner will provide you with impeccable service before and during your stay. We offer our guests an experience so special a lot of our guests comment that they don't want to leave!

River Estate offers quality accommodations that are meticulously maintained and fairly priced. The homes are eclectic, comfortable and above all extremely peaceful and private. River Estate's prime location is central to all the great North Kauai attractions and activities and it offers a truly incomparable experience to those to make the journey here.

Put in simple terms River Estate is truly a Hawaiian Paradise....

The Guest House is our honeymooner's paradise. The home sits at the upper end of the estate tucked around a corner all by itself on the river. You'll feel alone here with only the sound of the river gently flowing over river stones, the exotic birds and the sound of the wind blowing through the bamboo across the river. This house is perfect for honeymooners and people looking for the special spot to relax without the distractions of the "real" world beyond the River Estate entry. The experience will relax and revialize you in a tropical paradise.

The Riverhouse is uniquely eclectic. Quality furnishings and art give the home it's character. From the late 1800's dining table and hutch to the new Tommy Bahama living room set to the genuine 30's Hawaiian art it all blends to create a completely unique experience for our guests. Are you looking for peace and quiet? Is comfort important to you? How about privacy? You'll find all those things here.

Cook meals in and relax on the covered lanai with friends. Enjoy the hot tub after a long day exploring the island. Paddle down to the beach and back!

This is the place to rent in Kauai! It has it all--great views, great location, great decor, great amenities. The owner was very helpful and thought of everrything--from the music selection to the hot tub on the lanai, you won't want to leave. Wow!

Exactly the atmosphere I hoped for!

Angi (Seattle, WA)
Review submitted: July 9, 2012   Date of arrival: March 20, 2012

When searching for where we would stay, my primary hope in renting a house was to be in the 'real' environment. I wanted to really see and hear Hawaii. This did exactly that.
The drive to the Guest House is down a long driveway lined with spectaluarly huge foliage, that I can only describe as prehistoric as I would imagine it. The sound of the rushing river just feet away from the house is soothing beyond belief. The sound of the frogs just after sunset lets you know you really are something tropical and amazing.
The house worked really well for us. We went with another couple and we each had 18 month olds. I worried about being some place that wasn't 'childproof' and my concerns vanished quickly. Though the house is raised up (I don't now what that is called there) and there are stairs to the front door, it was simple to block access for the kids to get outside. If we had wanted to leave the doors open, we knew a quick stop at Walmart for a baby gate for the stairs would have done the trick. Inside, there really wasn't anything they could get into. The only issue was the coffee table, but what child doesn't find a way to get hurt with a coffee table around?!
If you want secluded, tranquil, beautiful, peaceful, wonderful and waterfront, this is the place for you!

Fabulous Kauai property!

The River House is a wonderful place to stay on Kauai! We can't wait to return there. The listing description and pictures are very accurate. What you see at the website is what you get. On second thought--no it is not--it is even nicer than portrayed. The house is spotlessly clean and well maintained. The wood floors gleam. It is nicely and comfortably decorated. The kitchen is well equipped. We prepared most of our meals there and walked past the beautiful dining table to eat on the table on the lanai with the fantastic view of the river and all the beautiful trees and flowers. We picked our own grapefruit, tangelos, lime, and avocado. What a treat for us coming from a snowy climate. The spa on the lanai feels wonderful after a day of touring. The grill is nice and large enough for four. We all slept very well as the beds were quite comfortable.
The owner, Mark, was very helpful and I now call him a friend. He answered our questions about the area--especially where to snorkel and hike. He watched the weather and figured out the best times for us to do the activities we wanted. He made our bookings for a catamaran tour, helicopter tour, and luau. We were very well taken care of and everything went very seamlessly.
Hanalei is a nice location. Don't miss stopping in at Tahiti Nui and sit in the George Clooney chair. Sunsets off of Ke'e beach and Hanalei beach and pier. Hike the Napali coast. Snorkel at Tunnels and Anini Beach. Drive to Princeville and enjoy the Kilauea lighthouse. Go to church at the Waioli Hui mission church and enjoy the hymns sung in hawaiian--they are very welcoming and it was a beautiful service. Take a day and drive to Waimea canyon and Koke'e park. It is a bit of a drive, but the scenery is breathtaking. Don't miss seeing the Napali coast by catamaran or a helicopter tour of the island. Yes, they cost quite a bit but we are glad we did both of them. The luau at Tahiti Nui is not to be missed. As you can see, you won't be bored if you want to go out and do things. Or do nothing and enjoy the island ambience right there at the River House. It is located in a beautiful and quiet setting and it is nice to just sit back and enjoy the property.
Yes, we would definately recommend the River House to our friends and relatives. In fact, we already have. WE CAN NOT WAIT TO GO BACK!
