The best vacation.....

I am of two minds about what to say about HilHaven – I really don’t want it to get too popular and then I won’t be able to stay there again myself!! It is located on 1st Avenue right between the famous 5th Avenue and the even more famous Playa. It is magical – you are located in a veritable oasis of trees and flowers and on the other side of the gate is Playa del Carmen and everything you could possibly need. Just a few blocks up the way is Mega and WalMart. There is a wonderful market on 30th just around the corner going north from El Fogon and they even have a very nice restaurant. Great spot for breakfast.
We have found our absolute favorite restaurants there – and amazingly enough, none of them are on 5th avenue. We love Util Pasta Factory (located on 25th Avenue between 30 and 32)where you can choose your pasta and then choose your sauce. Another favorite is Mom’s on 30th. It is a funny bar-like atmosphere upstairs on a corner. The owner is always there to greet you. The food there is all absolutely fantastic and the ribs are out of this world. The steaks are also the very best you will find in Mexico. Then there is Manny’s on 4th between 10th and 15th - they have wonderful roast prime rib!!! And the schnitzel is out of this world. We tried H C Monteray and were disappointed so then tried El Fogon nest door and it was great. Another place we loved was Pesca on 30th (again across from Mega). They have the freshest fish (caught that day) and save room for the pineapple ice cream!! There is also a super breakfast or lunch place called Cueva del Chango (Monkey Cave) and it is located on Calle 38 going towards the beach. Also La Tarraya Restaurant on Calle 2 on the beach that serves the best shrimp cocktail.
There are two ruins right in town just off 5th avenue, one is just off Calle 2. There are about 100 small ruins in Playacar too.
The units at HilHaven are perfect – beds very comfortable, the place is spotless and everything works well. Lizardo and his family are there to make your stay the very best. And then there is Isis – the resident diva dog. She is absolutely the sweetest dog ever and will visit with you every day. One really does not need to have a car when staying there – everything is within walking distance and if you buy too much to carry home, the taxis are quite reasonable.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet-friendly, sight seeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway

My PLAYA home away from home

I stayed in one of Hilhaven's studio apartments. Upon first entering, I was very much surprised how beautiful the room was. delightful artwork, gorgeous tile work, artsy details, designer lamps, a full assortment of appliances, very nice pots and pans, and gorgeous glasses - all there for my use. Great hot water, chlorinated and safe. I was very happy. Hilhaven is on one of the nicest streets in Playa. Just around the corner from 5th Avenue and just around the corner from the BEACH; and centrally located right in the middle of Playa. I stayed 1½ months and enjoyed what almost felt like my own private house. This room had a great balcony overlooking the avenue. Hilhaven had great security…a huge always locked gate. And I swear, I could have left my room door unlocked, as I felt so safe and secure there. Lizardo and his family who lived there were very friendly and always there to help…and they kept my room sparkling clean. The entire city of Playa felt extremely safe and secure. I didn’t hesitate to take long walks everywhere throughout the city. The TV had many channels…maybe 80….and I watched English movies (subtitled in Spanish) all through the night many times. There were about 8 English channels, with GREAT movies showing 24/7. Thank you Hillary for creating such a great First Class hotel in Playa. I miss Hilhaven every day since I returned to 6 inches of snow. My house is very nice, but Playa and Hilhaven is so VERY SPECIAL. I can’t recommend Hilhaven enough, and hope to come back next year.

Hidden Gem in Playa del Carmen!

First of all, Hilary (the owner) and her staff (Lizardo and family) go above and beyond to make sure your trip goes perfectly. If you need a suggestion or advice for anything in Playa, you should ask Hilary or Lizardo because they know the best Playa has to offer. Everything from restaurants to someone who can help you mail things back home. When we decided last minute to extend our stay, Hilary made sure she could accommodate us! Add to that, the fact this charming place is somehow in the perfect location, near everything, while at the same time being secluded and quiet, and you have a recipe for a wonderful trip. Let's get to the details!

The condo is about one block from the beach and also about one block from 12th st and 5th ave which is the center of everything that is happening in Playa. You might think this place would be loud at night with the clubs nearby, but it is not. It is quiet and comfortable.

There is a ceiling fan and separate air conditioner in each bedroom which is very convenient, I must say. And the beds were more comfortable than any other place I have stayed in Playa. The kitchenette is stocked with everything you need if you like to cook your own meals. Rooms are big, clean and comfortable. Mosaic tile floors and lots of traditional accents, very tastefully done.

Playa is very safe as it is, but the building is secure nonetheless. You are given a key to a gated fence which surrounds the property. Only people staying at the property have keys. It is like home in this way.

You will be hard-pressed to find a better deal in Playa. We stayed over Christmas and New Year's and Hilary made sure we got a great deal. THANK YOU HILARY!

Recommended for: age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet-friendly, sight seeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway
