vacation rental description

Enjoy life on a 600 acre horse and cattle farm, with views of the Southwest Mountain range, miles of hiking, gorgeous scenery, and a wonderfully decorated antebellum home.  We are a mile off a four lane highway, but a world away from city life.

Great for families of all ages.  We have a "Bunk Room" for the children, and three spacious bedrooms for the adults.  The farm offers miles of spectacular hiking, and has 9 ponds, two of which are full of bass and bream.

We are a 30 minute drive from Charlottesville and Monticello, and it is one of the most charming drives in all of America, through Cismont and Keswick hunt country.  Gordonsville, four miles away, has become a half-sized Middleburg, with outstanding restaurants and trendy shoppes.  Within 15 minutes of the farm you will find Barboursville Winery, Horton Cellars and Keswick Vineyard, three of the best wineries in the state.

Two presidential homes are close by:  Jefferson's Monticello, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Madison's Montpelier, recently restored to Madison era authenticity.  The County is also home to Wilderness Battlefield, the Exchange Hotel Civil War Museum, and the James Madison Museum.  For the more active, horseback riding is available on a neighboring farm, tubing and rafting can be done on the James or Rappahanock rivers nearby, you can go hot air ballooning, or even sky dive from the local airport.

And you have all these opportunities in one of the most beautiful areas in the Eastern U.S.A.  There is a reason Charlottesville is consistently rated one of the top places to live or retire.  This area is spectacular.

Wolf Trap Farm

house rental amenities

It is a farm, but that does not mean "rustic".  This is a Manor House, with all the modern conveniences, including central heat and air, two fully equipped kitchens, two working fireplaces, whirlpool tub in the largest bedroom, dishwasher, clothes washers and dryers, a formal dining room, televisions (but NOT cable - You don't come here to watch TV).

Outside, we have porches offering sunset views over the mountains, a spacious patio with hot tub, horseshoe pits, a rope swing, views of horse paddocks, cow pastures and ponds, and the ever-changing glory of nature.  The countryside both at the farm and in the area is just stunning.  The hills are high enough to afford vistas, but not so high as to tire the legs or obstruct transportation.

activities and attractions in Charlottesville Virginia

The top attractions are Monticello, Montpelier, the high quality local wineries and restaurants, the lesser Civil War sites, and the City of Charlottesville.

The top activities are hanging out with your family or friends at the farm itself, taking walks on the farm, fishing in our ponds, horseback riding with our neighbors at Oakland Heights, enjoying the wineries and restaurants, shopping in Gordonsville, Orange, Charlottesville and Culpeper, and taking slow, scenic drives through the beautiful countryside.

traveler reviews for this charlottesville house rental

Review submitted: August 23, 2014   Date of arrival: June 29, 2014

We enjoyed our stay at the manor house. My family with our two sons (3 and 5) met my mother, her partner, and my grandmother aged 93. We enjoyed the property. We fished in the pond (catching and cooking a fish) and visited the horses. We explored Luray Caverns, Montpelier, and wineries. My mother brought her golden doodle and I bought our toy poodle mix. They enjoyed the property, as well as playing with a dog from the cottage rental.
We were concerned about the high number of King Charles spaniels in the hot barn which we understood were owned by a lady who rented the barn. She was not friendly whenever we were walking past the dog barn to the horse barn or if we tried to have a conversation with her. There were maintenance issues with the house, but they were corrected in a timely manner. There was a small leak from master bathroom down dining room wall, but Mrs. Brown was aware of it. Mrs. Brown was very helpful in general.

Recommended for: age 55+, families with young children, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, pet-friendly, sight seeing, romantic getaway

Owners response: Thank you for your thoughtful review. The "dog lady" is gone (remind me not to agree to rescue people in great distress), and the barn is again full of horses.

Great winter weekend

Review submitted: February 5, 2014   Date of arrival: January 18, 2014

My two brothers, their families, and my Dad rented all three houses at the Wolf Trap Farm for a January weekend to celebrate my Dad's 80th birthday and had a great time. There were 13 of us -- so, we needed all three houses. This is not a luxury house but a working farm that was well maintained and welcoming. The setting on top of a hill overlooking a valley -- even in the dead of winter -- is idyllic.

The Manor House is the nicest of the three houses -- very cozy. We spent our group time there. The sitting rooms were too small hold everyone, but they made for very nice reading / game playing rooms. The dining room sat everyone comfortably, and the kitchen was large and well appointed. We used 3 of the 4 bedrooms in the manor house -- 2 of which have a private bathroom. The kids enjoyed the 4-bed bunk room. The hot tub, fire pit, and rope swing (conveniently adjacent) were also big hits and heavily used (tons of firewood). The servants quarters and pond house were also nice and could be self sufficient. The servants quarters are right next to the manor house, but the pond house is about 100 yards away -- flash lights are needed for an evening trek! There's a partially completed game room with fuse-ball, pool, and ping pong half way to the pond house that could be a real asset if it's completed (and heated!).

We absolutely loved the horses, dogs, and one potbelly pig(!) -- the staff that cared for them were real nice and accommodating to our kids. The owner also has a very detailed guide to area that was very helpful. We had one problem with the water during our trip, but the owner and staff very responsive and really worked hard to get everything working.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, families with young children, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, sight seeing

Had a great week on this beautiful farm! The boys had fun exploring the woods, falling in the creek, chasing frogs & lizards, fishing, feeding the horses (Radar & Will) and swinging on the rope swing behind the house. Several hikes in the nearby mountains & a fun visit to Charlottesville & Monticello. Hope to return to this amazing place sometime soon.
