A little piece of paradise

Review submitted: April 13, 2014   Date of arrival: March 8, 2014

We love this spot! Having stayed in this house for a month two previous years, my husband and I recently returned for a two-week visit, and were even happier with this spot than ever before. Quaint and comfortable, this house is so much more. It is immaculate and nicely furnished. The house now has a brand new bathroom and laundry facilities, and the kitchen is more than adequate for eating "at home" (we ate two of our three meals in with the third out at one of the many wonderful Charleston restaurants - Hominy Grill is a must and Jack's for breakfast is a delicious local spot). We love the back patio - absolutely delightful - and the beds are very comfortable. Ceiling fans and the heating/cooling system make the house comfortable in all kinds of weather. And while the house has the modern conveniences that you would want, the historic charm remains. We found the house plenty large enough for us (three rooms on each floor), even when our friends visited for a few days during a previous stay. The location of the house is perfect - it is an easy walk downtown (go through the College of Charleston campus, a nice walk in and of itself) with restaurants and necessities located within a mile. You can also stroll straight down the street all the way to the harbor, the most beautiful walk in the evening. And it is central to the greater Charleston area with easy access to the highways that lead to the many sites of Charleston. Even the immediate surroundings are pleasant; the house is located in a small enclave of attractive townhouses. Finally, all of our contact with the owner was very positive. He was accommodating and anxious to make our stay a good one. We also found the cost to be very fair. There is no wi-fi in the house, but the owner did say we could arrange for it if we chose. We did not; the Smith and Bull Cafe a block away has free internet, good food, and delightful people, and there are three Starbucks within walking distance. So, would we return? Yes, in a heartbeat! And would we recommend this property to a friend? We have already! For us, this is a little piece of paradise in a beautiful city. We can't wait to come back!

Fair price, Clean, Great Custom Service, Nice home

Review submitted: May 20, 2013   Date of arrival: August 27, 2012

We arrived early for our two week honeymoon, so the cleaners were finishing a very thorough job of sanitizing the home and the linens. This house has charm and is warm and cozy. Some of the decorations are a bit different for our taste but all in all it's ok. The house has tons of natural light and a good heating and cooling system. The beds are ok, it took several nights to find out which bed was best for us to sleep in. Almost like the three bears one was too soft for us, one too, hard for us and the other was just right and we awoke refreshed and without back ache. I thought the location was good but the parking is tight and getting in and out is a bit of trouble. everything in the house works perfectly and having the dishwasher was so convenient. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at 6 Ambrose Alley and will absolutely stay here again. The owner is very pleasant and helpful. He made every effort to help us. I must say I was very pleased with the whole experience.

Review submitted: May 7, 2013   Date of arrival: April 30, 2013

I was very disappointed with this property. I wouldn't say it was in the historic district...more in the college district. Although we walked everywhere, it was a trek to the actual historic district. Although not the fault of the owner, the photos made it look considerably larger than it is. On the upside, it was very clean and well kept, and it was nice to have the place to ourselves. I wouldn't call the furniture "antiques", just old stuff, in my opinion. Very overpriced, as well. I felt I could have stayed in a more modern place closer to the historic district for the same price. The ambiance of staying in a "historic" house was not worth it to me, but I suppose it depends on your taste. Some would probably enjoy it, but it was not my experience.

Owners response: Hmmmmm, having been in the B&B business for 10 years, I'm used to getting bad feedback from the people that expect the most. If you go out of your way to try and accommodate someone you usually get bit. All I can say is read my other reviews and my 14 year guestbook.
