vacation rental description

6 Bedrooms + Library (add'l sleeping) 6 full bathrooms Maximum Capacity 21

The villa is one of the most unusual rentals available in the center of Rio de Janeiro. It looks/feels like a old mansion that has sat on the little gated street for a century. Yet is is only six years old. It was designed and built by Mike (a NYC design prof/hotel school grad) and run by Adan (a native of Mexico City transplanted to Rio while his wife completes her PhD). The two principals + craftsmen friends use the villa as a design lab to show their work to clients of their architectural and interior design business. It is ALWAYS a work in progress and the interior photos are apt to change from month to month. It is a high spirited and very fun spot for guests to stay while working or visiting in Rio.

In only this July and August we have thrown a villa wedding reception with tables on the stone street, a National Geographic film team, a family reunion for a former US naval attache serving in 1940s Rio, and served as a set for a new Brazilian movie with back up team of 56

villa rental amenities

The villa is available as a bare bone rental with only one maid to change linens and make beds for guests who want total privacy. On the other hand - the villa has a huge staff for the family or group who wants and needs lots of attention. The daily rental fee depends on the services guests need and is priced very well as compared to the five star hotel. we aim to top the service offered anywhere else in our city. Our planning starts with our first answers to inquiries. We can offer continental or full breakfasts, lunch, snacks, barbecues, and full sit down or buffet dinners. We are quite used to corporate, business, diploomatic, and family parties. We know the best purveyors for buying fresh ingredients, fine meats, great fish, etc. It is a fun spot and we love to throw a party for you.

We are in the process of developing an ala carte menu which will be published on our website the first week of September.

Adan, our concierge, has a staff of drivers, tour guides, packaged tour operators, and can help with detailed planning for your trip - from airport pick up until you depart (and even ship those things your forgot back home !!)

Mike handles all the email requests and helps guests who do not know the city and country (or south America) on how to arrange their time based on their interests.

One of the Villa staff members is a jazz musician and knows the RIo night life scene. Another is a set designer for Brazilian movies and knows what is hot in town at the moment.

IT has been a busy past three months with a total redo of the villa + movie shoots + a lot of big events BUT we will have a complete on-line villa photo scrapbook, manual, and menus within 6 weeks. The villa is closed for two weeks in August as we are redoing all of our wood floors and rooms as well as installing new wallpapers and lighting in many areas.

BEFORE YOU MAKE AN INQUIRY-

1. we are totally rented for all of the WORLD CUP PERIOD - we can only suggest properties much smaller than the villa

2. we can not offer rentals less than 5 days for large groups - it is just too time consuming to do a changeover after 21 guests have been with us for a short period. There are no short term stays for large groups at regular rack rental fees

3. although we can house up to 21 - there is only room for 6 couples in total privacy. 21 is the maximum but 12 to 16 more ideal

4. we can for the very large group use the villa + our other penthouse also advertised on homeaway + neighboring pousada and hostels

5. rental rates VARY according to the number of guests and services requested. We are indeed an economical alternative for a large group and offer features not easily available in most aparament or villa rentals.

6. we LOVE a party BUT do not rent to groups who do not agree to abide by the villa quiet hours. We are in a family neighborhood and love our neighbors. We do not rent to any group without asking lots of questions as we wish to make sure our staff, our villa, and our neighborhood are respected.

The villa is probably one of the most unusual rentals available in Rio de Janeiro. It looks like a very old mansion that has sit on the little gated street for a century. Yet is only six years old. It was designed and built by Mike (a NYC dentist-grad of hotel restaurant school) and run by Adan (a native of Mexico City transplanted to Rio while his wife completes her PhD). In the past 6 weeks we have organized a wedding party with street tables.

We have guested the National Geographic film team, a family reunion, a shooting location for new Brazilian popular movie and a US group of teen dancers performing thru Brasil

activities and attractions in Rio de Janeiro Brazil

Basically the villa is organized on 4 levels around a central atrium. All rooms open to the central atrium via balconies, gardens, or a glass roof which opens to the night sky and marvelous moon views.

Level one is a grand entrance foyer off the little street which we use for parties.  A great modern kitchen with every possible culinary gadget, huge island, business center, and enough antique porcelain to serve 100. Off the kitchen is the new atrium (morning room) and a grand dining room. The atrium fireplace is undergoing restoration by the artist who completed faux painting in the restored Teatro Municpal Opera house. The ceiling opens electronically and the second floor balcony gives way to 3 bedroom suites - all with sitting areas and marble deluxe baths with jacuzzis. The dining room is great for a family having breakfast or a sit down for 24. Off these rooms is the wood paneled library with TV/Cinema area and our very special antique Titanic model which the house staff presented one day to the owner.

There is a smaill stone powder room off the back stone stairhall.

The second floor suites open by pairs of antique french doors or stained glass windows to the atrium. Each room makes for a great private sleeping and enterntaining space as sofas and easy chairs make it comfortable. These suites get heavy use and are usually redecorated, painted, wallpapered, slipcovered continually duriing the year.

The third floor is accessed by a stone stairway (with our little Budda in the corner) and panels of native birds and stained glass and a collection of both naif art and the owners original interior sketches for the house on the walls.

Once yo
Off the first part of the garden is a trellised walkway of local honeysuckle and some fresh fruit trees as well as a little herb garden. There are two small little cabanas off of this walkway which are kind of like 18th centruy wood ship cabins. They share a bath with shower. They have desks with plenty of bookshelves, hundreds of books, and are comfy and cool little spots - full oc character. At the end of the garden walk is a separate building which houses the Balinese Casa - two stories with a king size loft above and huge living room below which sleeps 4 on the banquette single beds. This house has a separate bath and shower with chicken coop type windows which look thru the glass roof all the way to the first floor.
u open the huge door to the third and fourth floor levels - you see the great little pool with its lion fountain,

a small sitting area with our birds in cages and the local birds drinking out of the feeders. The garden is ALWAYS a work in process as the plantings change continually. We try to keep it in flower year around with hanging planters, placas of bromiliads and orchids. THeir is a barbecue there and the staff lights the gas lanterns at sunset

Perfect Villa for our Rio Wedding

Norm G. (Seattle)
Review submitted: July 7, 2011   Date of arrival: May 26, 2011

We rented the Villa from May 26 to June 5, 2011, for our wedding. We had 50 guests from the United States coming to Rio and we rented several properties. This property is an exceptional property and provides the best comfort in my opinion. In comparison, our Honeymoon night was spent in one of the penthouse suites at the Copacabana Palace ($R 7,200 per night), and the only difference between the Copacabana Palace and the Villa is the service is far superior at the Villa.

I contacted the owner via email and was able to meet with him in person at his office in New York. This was the first great experience with this property. The owner is a very gregarious, cheerful, and genuine person. He explained the property; showed us pictures & floorplans, and offered to help with any other needs.

The Villa is tucked away on a private dead-end street. The street is gated off and is essentially free of any traffic. The Villa is the standout property on this little street and is elegantly lit by a single gas-fired lamp. The Villa is about three blocks from Post 3 on Copacabana Beach (5 minute walk), across the street from the Metro Stop, and on the major busline. Complimentary WiFi throughout the property and a provided laptop helped us to plan events and stay in touch. The entry uses a coded lock system so we never had to worry about losing a key or being locked out.

The kitchen is a fully-loaded spacious room with all the high-end appliances a chef could desire. (Viking range, subzero fridge) We held a rehearsal dinner Feijoada for 70 people with ease. We wanted to serve beer for the dinner and a staff member arranged for a complete draft system to be delivered. (Keg, Refrigerator, taps, cups, and coasters)

We had 15 people (including 2 kids) comfortably stay at the Villa. We converted the library into another bedroom to help out with space. Each day we were greeted by a full breakfast spread made up of fruit, breads, pastries, eggs, yogurt, juice, coffee, tea, chocolate milk, etc. The staff varied the breakfast and treated us to first-class meals each day. (the stuffed French toast is amazing!)

Each day at least three staff members arrived early in the morning to quietly make breakfast, clean, water the plants, do laundry, etc. The staff provided excellent customer service. If we had any questions or needs, there was a staff person available to take care of it. I was extremely impressed by the service and care taken with this property.

Frequent travelers

A.A (USA)
Review submitted: May 10, 2013   Date of arrival: February 4, 2013

I and my group of friends are pretty frequent Brazilian travelers and this year opted for a few days in Rio and then Carnaval in Salvador Bahia ( a first experience). The three nights at the villa were so packed full of delight - that I am glad we choose not to stay in a beachfront hotel. I did not have clear expectations about what a house rental would be like but with the size of the group and the non availability of affordable rooms - short stay in the villa ws the only solution. Great fortune on our part.

So much has been written that is difficult to say more. Everything about this incredible house and its staff and its style of making you at home is worthy of an award.

I spent one morning in the library with the house guest book which I retrieved fro the entry hall table, reading all the messages from people all over the world who have stayed here and penned their wishes and feelings. It is obvious that this place has quite a fan club and I am but the newest member. Thank you Michael and Adan for all your superb planning and creative thinking. Thank yoy Kelly, Marcia, and Marcos for your kind care. You occupy a special place with us. No one does it better than you guys. I fear it will be hard to reserve relatively late as we did this time.

ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH

vdfjaj (Southampton New York)
Review submitted: May 8, 2013   Date of arrival: April 18, 2013

This is my second stay and my second review of the villa. It is hard to imagine that this mansion which received my highest rating in 2008 - could find room for change. Decoration and service was then over the top The third floor was partially under construction while I was there - an expansion of the pool area, a new bathroom, and some changes to the little 2 story house on the top floor back in the garden. The new garden layouts and more tropical feel with the birds in cages is marvelous. Adan, the local owner and manager showed us the new colors as the house is being repainted top to bottom. It would seem that this group never stops - always improving, changing, a fresh feel, different menus, but the same smiles from the same wonderful staff. It feels like coming home. Met Raul, the owner of the villa's affiliated tour group - Rios de Historias and booked two walking tours thru him. I felt that spending a few hours with someone so passionate about the history of Rio de Janeiro has given me a whole new perspective on my adopted city. Our last day was spent on a drive to Petropolis and lunch at the Pousada in Araras. Magnificent. The totally redecorated libray, living room-atrium, and three second floor bedrooms give a very English feel to the place. The pink color of the morning room, the black marble fireplace, and the mossy green carpet are unbelievable. Luckily - the kitchen is the same. Just more chefs tools. Adan explained that the office is being moved to the third floor and in May - there will be new baking center and ice machine in its place due to all the receptions and functions being held at the Villa. Half of the villas air conditioning was changed in April and the other half will be changed in May. No interruptions for us though. Thanks to Paula, Kelly, Ceara and Marcia who pampered us beyond

belief. There is some very new internet service changes which will bring Rio into a league ready to host the World Cup. Our internet service was spotty at times due to the changes. For the inconvenience - the Villa hosted a full sit down breakfast for the week we were there. Pancakes, waffles, casseroles - the whole range. I must say that considering the huge amount of construction - we were never bothered and the villa was set to shine every day when we returned from our tours. I am looking forward to the Olympics and our third trip with a stay at the Villa. Once you find a spot like this - you never change.
