The Secret to the Secret Getaway is its location, quality and price. Why stay in the nicest hotel suite in town, when you can have much more, for significantly less money?

We are located two blocks from the Beach, Stearns Wharf, Public Pool, Harbor, world-class dining, and downtown shops, including our own local Farmers market. Leave your car and parking worries behind. We even offer RARE off street reserved parking.

Within blocks are a European deli and market, bakery and sandwich shop, three wineries and a grocery store leaving little need to leave the neighborhood. In addition there are bike rentals, Segway rentals, peddle surrey rentals, a skate park, the Chase Palm Park with a merry-go-round and the site of a craft fair each Sunday that lines the beach boardwalk. The Santa Barbara Zoo and the Bird Sanctuary are an easy mile and half walk. If you are traveling to Santa Barbara by train the Secret Getaway is two blocks from the train station and there is a car rental agency two blocks away in case you want to explore the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. If you are tired of walking, all of these attractions can be reached by a local 25 cents-a-ride shuttle bus that runs up State Street and along the ocean front from the harbor to the zoo.

The Secret Getaway is new and resides in a historical turn of the century building that retains the charm of the day’s bygone. It has been lovingly restored to reflect the true authentic Santa Barbara style. The beautiful limestone floors, faux painting and ten feet ceilings all give it a romantic and European feeling.

The bright kitchen is fully equipped, including spices, with granite counter tops, all appliances and your own washer and dryer.

The bathroom is immaculate with custom stone work throughout, a built in Jacuzzi tub, separate large walk- in shower and Santa Barbara style cabinets with matching granite.

The living room has a Waterford fireplace, comfortable couch (queen sleeper), 42' HDTV which replaced the smaller one in the picture, DVD and stereo. Complimentary wireless internet access is also available for your convenience. The bedroom offers a king-size feather top bed with luxury linens.

The bedroom and kitchen each have eight foot glass doors that lead to the your own veranda where you can enjoy the California sun, complete with Bistro set, potted flowers and gas grill.

For your convenience we also offer private reserved parking and a washer and dryer in the Secret Getaway. Everything you need to complete your stay.

Also a helpful hint when comparing: We are not on a commercial thorough fare or next to the highway or railroad tracks. We are in a nice residential neighborhood.

Just okay...

First let me preface by saying that Santa Barbara is a relatively expensive holiday destination. This apartment is very passable, but not cheap by any means. Remember when you calculate the rental cost to include the cleaning charges, Paypal or bank transfer fees and any other costs, these added up and made the accommodation costs comparable to some pretty motels in the same area. The location is good, very close to the beach and walking distance to restaurants, cafes and downtown (if you're okay with hikes). The apartment was very clean, the bed was very comfortable and the kitchen has reasonable equipment, however if you like to cook, be warned that there are absolutely no food staples other than salt and pepper - and a lovely welcome bottle of champagne. Privacy was an issue for us, the little balcony overlooks the parking lot, and every window overlooks neighbours' windows at close proximity. The apartment feels completely airless when the windows are closed, but being on the ground floor we were not comfortable leaving the windows open at night. In the daytime we felt we were in a fishbowl when the blinds were open - people looked in as they walked by unit from the parking lot. The bedroom blinds are vertical blinds with no bottom weights, so they don't close properly and swing in any breeze making a clattering noise. Furthermore, one of the vertical slats was missing which meant the morning light streamed in at 6:30am. The WIFI signal was weak, and having no local phone made making reservations for restaurants an issue. All-in-all this unit was just okay I think there are probably better apartments available.

Owners response: For the past 12 years, we have both owned and managed this beautiful and historic West Beach property, in addition to 15 others, for which we have received hundreds of 5 star reviews. This guest posted perhaps the worst review we have ever had.

From the onset of the reservation process they were not happy with Santa Barbara pricing (which is one of the most expensive worldwide), the Canadian exchange rate fees and the international bank wire fees, the latter two of which we have no control.
After they evaluated the 700+ VRBO vacation rentals, in addition to our local hotels, they attempted to negotiate our rates, which were not provided. And yet they still chose our most economic Getaway. This must tell you something about the value of our property.

Our location, price, and quality is unmatched and our reviews and length of business prove this. The Secret Getaway offers a king bedroom, beautiful limestone bath with walk in shower and separate Jacuzzi tub, granite counter tops, fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, living room with fireplace, large flat screen, small terrace, private parking, complimentary internet and all paper, soaps/shampoos and cleaning products, towels and linens. All of this is much more than a hotel room offers.

The Secret Getaway is on the ground floor and as such does not have complete privacy without closing the blinds, as is the case in any ground floor hotel property. However, the good news about this review is that this is highlighted, as the most important thing to us is that our guests are happy and return.

This guest also mentioned a vertical blind slat was missing and weak internet, both of which were not mentioned during their stay and both would have been an easy fix. And we certainly don’t stock the kitchen with food or beverages as they mention, nor do we advertise such, other than a complimentary bottle of champagne.

The square footage and quality, location and pricing offer more than any of our competition and we urge any guest to compare.

We enjoy meeting and working with guests from all over the world. However, as a matter of principle, even though they threatened a bad review, I refused to offer any further compensation.

Mediterranean Oasis

This place was better than we expected, not that we expected anything bad, but we have never been wowed. The Secret Getaway sits on the ground floor of a very charming Mediterranean style home with nooks and crannies of serenity, fountains and gardens. The apartment was very clean and homey with a well stocked kitchen, perfect for us.
The bed was comfortable with quality linens. The bathroom was a spa, just like the description said. A great place to unwind after walking around SB. During our entire stay, we rarely saw or heard any other people, despite knowing there were other residents in for the week. It felt like we had this whole oasis to ourselves. The little patio off the kitchen and bedroom was a perfect spot to have our morning coffee and breakfast.
What makes this a quaint retreat is that there are no signs and no front desk and no sight of any housekeeping staff. The little twists and turns throughout the estate makes each individual apartment hidden. In my opinion, this place is situated just off the beaten path in a good way. Out of the way of the mob of tourists and on the great side near the SB marina which makes for an awesome sunrise/sunset walk. The bulk of the people tend to thin out on this side of State Street which was PERFECT for us.
We chose this place for the, beach/State Street walking convenience, large kitchen, spa like bathroom and the gas fireplace which we didn't end up needing because of the unusual heat wave that went through during our stay. Coming from CT, we like our cozy comfort and here you will find it and more!

Recommended for: age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway

Super cute unit perfect for our stay

My 2 year old keeps asking me to take her back to the "yellow house, yellow house!" So I'll take that as a sign that she loved the place. Clean, convenient, awesome. Would stay again.
