vacation rental description

Rent this tastefully furnished and beautifully appointed, large 2-story 1908 Craftsman home by the night or by the week. Recently restored and upgraded, decorated with a mix of antiques and artisan furnishings, and outfitted with high quality bedding, this home feels more like an upscale historic inn than a typical vacation rental.

This house has a great location just 10 miles from downtown San Francisco, within a half mile of the University of California, Berkeley, and just steps to nearby shopping, dining, and recreational opportunities. Literally right around the corner you'll find delightful shops, restaurants, and grassy parks. This is a perfect place for families visiting their Cal students, professional staff attending conferences, and families on vacation.

We provide high quality, down bedding, plush towels, free wi-fi, nationwide phone calling, and full house privileges (kitchen access, comfy living room, wrap-around deck, pretty backyard). With great public transportation, Zip Cars nearby, and easy walks to amenities, you don't need a car. But if you have one, we provide one off-street parking spot with the rental, and street parking is plentiful and free overnight and for 2-hour increments between 10 pm and 5 pm. Ask me about nearby parking garages and street parking passes.

*** AMENITIES ***

- A cozy living room with cable TV and radio, comfortable seating, travel books, tourist guides, maps, magazines, games, and the Sunday San Francisco Chronicle.

- A spacious, clean dining room, with a large dining table that seats 12 people (bistro tables can be added to seat a few more).

- A well-organized, clean, fully equipped kitchen with microwave, oven/stove, fridge, stainless steel pots and pans, utensils, serving dishes, wine glasses/corkscrew, a breadmaker, a blender, a coffee grinder, a large electric roasting pot, and recycling/composting bins.

- A lush, green, private yard with teak outdoor furniture.

- An airy front porch with seating and tables where you can take your breakfast or enjoy a quiet glass of wine in the ambiance of this mixed student/family neighborhood.

- Two bathrooms with tub & shower, privacy screen (for multiple users), hair dryer, storage baskets for your things, plenty of plush bath towels and hand towels. Color-coded towels, lots of storage bins and closet space, and makeup mirrors in your room make bathroom sharing easy.

*** ROOMS ***

All of the rooms are super clean and absolutely gorgeous, with clean, recently painted walls, comfortable and interesting high quality furnishings in matching color schemes, and completely uncluttered. Some rooms can accommodate more than two (with our portable cots/futon chairs) and one of our rooms accommodates up to 5 guests.

Bedroom #1 - THE WILDCAT CANYON ROOM

17 ft x15 1/2 ft (263 square feet)

This is the largest room, with a king sized bed (sleeps 2), a futon sofa (sleeps 2), a table, a sitting area, and a large, walk-in closet that converts to a small bedroom for one adult or two children. All bedding is new, with goose down and feather pillows and comforters, pretty duvet covers and bedspreads, and high quality cotton sheets. You'll have your own iron and ironing board, a hamper or laundry basket, and extra blankets and throws. Large windows on two walls flood this room in natural light, which you can filter with the sheers or block with the curtains.

If you're traveling with children, the huge closet of the Wildcat Canyon Room, which we call 'The Little Farm,' is equipped with small cots which can sleep two children. The Little Farm is named after a small teaching farm which is part of a nature education center at Tilden Regional Park. Visitors to Berkeley can take their children to experience The Little Farm, where they can pet the animals, travel on a miniature steam railway, and take a ride on the antique merry-go-round.

The room's namesake, Wildcat Canyon, is a valley just east of the Berkeley Hills where visitors love to go hike and picnic along Jewel Lake and Lake Anza. Wildcat Canyon was named for the mountain lions which used to be fairly common in the area. The southern end of the canyon is part of Tilden Regional Park and the northern end is part of Wildcat Canyon Regional Park.

Bedroom #2 - THE MUIR WOODS ROOM

14 1/2 ft x 12 1/2 ft (181 square feet)

This is a large room with a comfortable queen-sized bed, a desk and chair, a reading chair, a dresser for your clothes, end tables and lamps, a closet with hangers and hamper, your own iron and ironing board, and a small space heater plus extra blankets for those cool nights.

The Muir Woods Room pays homage to Muir Woods National Monument, the cathedral of redwoods located 25 miles west of Berkeley, which was established in 1908 when President Roosevelt signed legislation to protect an old-growth coast redwood forest from destruction. The trees' ages range from 400 to 800 years, and their height up to 250 feet.

Bedroom #3 - THE ROSE GARDEN ROOM

13 ft x 10 ft (130 square feet)

This room is furnished with a gorgeous and comfortable queen-sized bed (sleeps 2), a reading chair, a dresser for clothes, end tables and lamps, a closet with hangers and hamper, your own iron and ironing board, and extra blankets plus a small space heater for cool nights.

Named after the Berkeley Rose Gardens, it features floral rose decor and antique wooden dressers with hand-painted roses. The Berkeley Rose Garden, opened in 1937, is a gorgeous, terraced amphitheatre and 220-foot-long redwood pergola, where people go to amble, picnic, and relax in the florid surrounds. East Bay rose societies and community members donated hundreds of hours of volunteer time, and they still participate in its upkeep.

Bedroom #4 - THE BAYSHORE ROOM

21 ft x 10 ft (210 square feet)

This is a large sunroom with wrap-around windows, a comfortable queen sized bed (sleeps 2), a teak cabinet with drawers for your stuff which opens to become a desk, a teak chair, end tables and lamps, a closet with hangers and hamper, your own iron and ironing board, and a small space heater plus extra blankets for cool nights.

This room is an homage to the bay area's coastal environments, from the bay shores at the nearby Berkeley Marina to the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean against the rocky shores along Highway 1. Stinson Beach, Muir Beach, and Point Reyes National Seashore are less than an hour away.

Bedroom #5 - THE ANGEL ISLAND ROOM

7 ft x 10 ft (70 square feet)

This tiny room is big enough for just one person. It has a twin bed, an amazing antique secretary desk, a chair, and a small teak hutch that can also open out into a desk. Brand new down and feather pillows and comforters, Egyptian cotton sheets, and cozy coverlets offer a downy soft respite at the end of a long day.

The room is named after Angel Island State Park, the largest natural island in the Bay. The island's mere 1.2 square miles accommodates over 1(phone number hidden)visitors annually from all over the world, who come by boat or ferry to visit its four historic sites and miles of hiking and biking trails.

CLEAN AND GREEN

We provide green living supports (recycling, composting, chemical-free bath products, etc.). Guests clean up after themselves after meals and other activities unless you add optional maid service. The house is deep-cleaned between guests, and once per week for extended stays (including linen/towel service). Cleaning products are chemical-free and unscented (Seventh Generation and Dr. Bronners), so you'll smell only the fresh air.

LOCATION/NEIGHBORHOOD

The house is located approximately 1/2 mile south of University of California, Berkeley; just a few blocks from the popular Telegraph Ave, College Ave, Claremont Ave shops and restaurants; and 10 miles from downtown San Francisco. Public transportation, walkable shops and restaurants, and Zipcars are abundant nearby.

OPTIONAL SERVICES

Some of my reviews mention breakfast. Please be aware that breakfast is not automatically provided, but can be added for an additional per person fee. Other optional services and supports (when available/possible and by advance arrangement) include maid service, linen service, laundry service, bicycle rentals, camping gear rentals, beach gear, picnic/lunch baskets, gift baskets or flowers for special occasions, and airport pickups. We need at least a week's notice to provide these optional services.

NOT A PARTY HOUSE

Important: if your group is looking for a house where you can hold loud parties, this is not the place. Families live nearby with small children and we strive to be good neighbors.

BUDGET OPTION

Because I've received numerous requests from budget travelers for deep discounts, travelers now have the option to rent bedrooms/bathrooms only (no kitchen, dining room, or living room) during the winter (off season) at a discount. This option is workable for groups who only need rooms for sleeping but do not need the kitchen, living room, and dining room. Folks asking for deep discounts should be aware, I'm on a budget too!

traveler reviews for this berkeley house rental

This is a wonderful place!

Review submitted: January 21, 2014   Date of arrival: September 15, 2013

My company hosted its launch party and retreat at Derby Creek Guesthouse and we couldn't have been happier with the accommodations. This is a first class vacation rental, far and away better appointed and more luxuriously comfortable than any vacation rental I've used in the past. The house is extraordinary: a fully restored Craftsman with the highest quality contemporary upgrades in both the kitchen and its large, immaculate bathrooms. The living areas were spacious enough for our 10-person meetings and our evening banquet and late morning brunch. Amy arranged catering for us by two local chefs who were trained in natural cooking (per our request) and the meals they served were top notch (and affordable)! The rooms were gorgeously decorated in nature themes with antiques suited to the era the house was built (early 1900's). The beds were great: firm, but with memory foam toppers, down bedding, and plenty of extra blankets. Every room has a desk, strong wi-fi, and optional wired internet, which is helpful for large file downloads. The neighborhood is peaceful but super convenient: bus stop a block away, restaurants right around the corner, and downtown Berkeley and the Cal campus just a half mile away. We had the place to ourselves, but Amy was quick to return a call to answer any questions we had or help with anything
we needed. Really, we can't say enough good things about our stay. Well worth the price of admission. We'll be back.

Private yet professional & eco-friendly stay!

Review submitted: January 17, 2014   Date of arrival: June 1, 2013

Amy was an exemplary host, and Homestay By the Bay was exactly what our non-profit was in need of for our recent group retreat. Amy was able to host the 7 of us with her entire house for the weekend so our team could meet, prep, and bond. There is a large living room that accommodated all of us comfortably during our long meetings, and a chef's kitchen with a full dining room for our group meals. We've stayed in many types of accommodations in the past, and I can truly say that Amy makes her operation a TRUE home away from home. Here are the little details that REALLY stood out and made a difference for us: Color-coordination of the towels that definitely came in handy for many in our team! Luxuriously eco-friendly atmosphere (linen towels to prevent waste, fragrance-free toiletries, etc.) A lovely AND fully stocked self-serve breakfast spread for our team to eat at staggered/different times (often hard to wrangle large groups to eat together based on different morning routines) If you're looking for intimate, private, yet professional accommodations, this is the place for you! I can't recommend this place enough! Thank you, Amy!!!
