Description: On the northern shore of Pine Island is the small
tropical location, Bokeelia. Accessible by car, and less than an
hour from I-75, this is one of the Palm Beach Post's top
ten "picture postcard perfect" Florida vacation destinations. You
won't find any high rises, traffic lights, or fast food restaurants
here. It is a perfect place to experience world-class fishing or
kick back and breathe in salty Gulf breezes.
Pine Island is the destination for those who treasure peace, and the
magnificence of nature. At the Shell House you can enjoy your first
cup of coffee on the veranda overlooking the canal before you idle
the four minutes out to Charlotte Harbor and your Gulf Slam. The
waters in this area have been named by Field and Stream Magazine as
the “Hottest Spot In Florida” for saltwater fishing because of the
immensely varied species that are still plentiful here. Boca Grande
Pass, home of several of the world’s richest tarpon tournaments is a
10-15 minute run.
You decide whether to fish the varied open and backwater spots or
boat out to bask on some of the most pristine island beaches
anywhere. Nearby Cayo Costa (a Florida State Park), and North
Captiva provide some of the world's best shelling. Useppa Island is
the legendary location of Jose Gaspar’s buried treasure and is the
home of the historical Collier Restaurant and Inn. Cabbage Key,
reputed home of the renowned ”Cheeseburger in Paradise”, is a short
hop from Useppa. An ancient home of the Calusa
Indians, Pine Island Sound and Carlotte Harbor are scattered with
Indian mounds and history. At day's end pull in, clean your catch,
rinse and stow your gear in the convenient lockable storage area,
and replay the dayfrom the veranda as you enjoy nature’s brightly
painted sunset.
