Belarus Local Information and Area Highlights Travel to Belarus / Belarus Vacation Rentals

Instead of visiting countries crowded with tourists, book a vacation rental smack dab in the middle of Europe; enjoy a unique vacation in the beautiful country of Belarus! You will be pleased to discover that the heart of Europe not only has miles and miles of gorgeous forests, but also features the charms of urban life.

A distinct and exciting vacation

To take a trip to Belarus is to take a step back in time and into a fascinating dynamic and political environment. While the region was settled in the sixth century, the People’s Republic of Belarus wasn’t declared until 1918 and as recently as the 1990’s, Belarus became a sovereign state with an elected president. The young, budding republic has been the center of much controversy and change over the past few decades. With its vast amount of land, Belarus boasts thriving agriculture and is also a center of trade, as it is surrounded by five countries, including Russia and Poland.

Belarus Key Areas

Belarus is not that much smaller than Great Britain, and consists of six regions: Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno, Minsk and Mogiliov. The regions have a combined total of 18 political units (or towns), as well as the capital city of Minsk.

As you build your itinerary for your Belarus vacation, you will no doubt make plans to visit the beautiful ruins and castles of the history-laden region. The Mir Castle is nearly 500 years old and is a stunning example of Belarusian architecture. The now-famous monument is currently being restored as it has endured much destruction over the past few centuries, particularly during the 1812 war. Another popular tourist attraction is the Brest Fortress, which doubles as an artistic masterpiece and a military fortress – it was a Russian outpost in the 1900’s. The most notable bit of history about it, however, is when it successfully shielded an entire garrison for a month during the Great Patriotic war.

But that’s hardly all Belarus has to offer. Tourists flock to the town of Ruzhany to get up close and personal with the ruins of the palace of the magnate Sapega, which were lived in during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. You can visit another palace, near Ruzhany and Kossovo, which shows off the Neo-Gothic architecture of the 1800’s, as well.

For those who wish to partake in eclectic dining, shopping, and nightlife activities, Minsk is your best bet! From Cheluskintsev Park to the Botanical Gardens to the Artists Market (where you can barter for pieces of art), there is plenty to see and do in this well-known city.

For history buffs, a visit to the Khatyn Memorial will be both an enlightening and sober experience. Nature buffs, too, will find a vacation to Belarus quite fulfilling. Of its 207.6 thousand sq km, a great deal is forested. Don’t forget to take a trip to at least one of the thousands of lakes in Belarus as well; the Narac Lake is a popular fishing spot among locals.
