Black Sand Beach vacation rentals
Black Sand Beach (Punalu’u Beach) lies between Na’alehu and Pahala on the Big Island of Hawaii. Its name is derived from the black sand that beautifully blankets the beach. The black sand is partially a result of “basalt” which occurs when lava explodes and cools after reaching the ocean. This process occurs in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where the endangered species of Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles can also be viewed. Some of the other endangered species found here are orange-black damselflies, native bees and the Hawaiian monk seal. Humpback whales and spinner dolphins are commonly sighted offshore and lovely native birds circle overhead. Makena beach, located south of Maui off Makena Alanui Road is another of the best beaches.
