Travel to Falkland Islands / Falkland Islands Vacation Rentals

The incredible wildlife, the warm people, and the conflict in 1982 all lead to the Falkland Islands. You may be flying to get from place to place, but you’ll find a wealth of Falkland Island vacation rentals from which to choose your perfect stay on the ground.

Falkland Islands People

With so much wildlife around, you wouldn’t want to be distracted from the great people of the Falkland Islands. Being quite British culturally, much of the infrastructure like the pubs and “bobbies” has distinctly British influence. There also are Chilean people who more likely work in technical fields rather than farm fields nowadays. A Scandinavian presence from generations ago started with sailors. Stanley has more of a sophisticated feel with its port attracting international fishing. The most common factor of all, though, is the welcoming, warmth, and openness to vacationers, opening up their lodges and bed and breakfasts to all.

Vacation Spots in the Falkland Islands

Stanley is an inviting, friendly capital town, where many of the streets are named for people through generations. Since only a small number of people live in Stanley, there’s a really rural feel to visiting. A major attraction in Stanley is the Falkland Islands Museum Brittania House, loaded with maritime-related and historical artifacts, and a carefully constructed exhibit for the Falkland Islands Conflict of 1982.

Darwin, so named for Charles Darwin, holds history of the gauchos who lived there in the 1800’s. Along with Goose Green, the 1982 conflict is quite apparent in the Darwin and Argentine Cemeteries, the Parachute Regiment memorial, and other historic sites. Golf, fishing, and horseback riding are activities offered at the Darwin Lodge. White sand beaches and rocky areas are the setting for Salvador, where fauna is extremely plentiful. Birdwatching can lead you into finding species of inland, shore and marine birds, while there are also elephant seals, sea lions, and of course, penguins in five varieties to view.

Port Louis is a wonderful starting point for trips to the north coast of East Falkland, of which Port Louis is the oldest settlement. The buildings in Port Louis are antique and capture the attention of many visitors, casual or dedicated. East of Port Louis is Volunteer Beach, having a wealth of penguin pairs who breed. San Carlos became especially famous in 1982 for taking on the role of the British forces’ Beach Head. Nearby Port San Carlos is a place for fishing (on the San Carlos river), great wildlife watching including sheep, and a view of majestic surroundings.

Sea Lion Island is five miles long and 1.5 miles wide. There are a number of silk fabric plantations that shelter many of the animals such as sea lions, varieties of penguins, and sea birds. Enjoy the sand beaches and cliffs as part of the landscape. Killer whales encircle Sea Lion Island, searching for their prey of the sea lions and elephant seals. Port Howard welcomes vacationers with hearty smiles. On the Port Howard Farm, 45,000 sheep are run, and other cattle are raised. Take a taste of “camp,” or Islands life here, and visit the small museum containing artifacts from the 1982 conflict. Each third year, the West Falklands Sports is held in Port Howard for a week, filled with celebration as well as horse racing.

Pebble Island has a diverse landscape, where sizeable ponds and moorland are not far from cliffs and sand beaches. The wildlife will not disappoint, such as grebes, black-necked swans, and many other birds. Go on a quest to discover the semiprecious gems, or check out the history, or the view of Elephant Beach, serving as an airstrip for Islander aircraft. Carcass Island is free of bird’s predators, and therefore has a real abundance of small birds including the Falklands thrush. Enjoy going organic with the meat, vegetables, and dairy available. Beachcombers should find real interest in Carcass Island.

Peer at the dolphins and albatross from very proximate angles on Weddell Island. The breeding colony of approximately 200 sea lions rest on the coastline and grass. Find the breeding grounds of Gentoo and Magellanic penguins at Mark Point and other locations.
