Georgia Key Areas The Atlanta Metro area is a vibrant, friendly area with a strong sampling of cultures and a combination of old and new. The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum unfolds reminders of the Carter presidency, while displaying Carter’s Nobel Peace Prize, and hosting an array of special events and exhibits. Experience the unequaled shopping, dining, and nightlife of the Buckhead community. You’ll find attractive parks like Centennial Olympic Park (form the 1996 Olympics), and the festival-laden Piedmont Park. Historical areas include the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, the home of the Civil War’s Atlanta Campaign. If you enjoy puppetry, check out the largest U.S. puppet theater – The Center for Puppetry Arts. An idyllic setting of beaches, swamps and marshlands defines Georgia’s coastal area. Notable drives include scenic Southern Passages along Highway 17, and a merged history, culture, and nature drive along the Liberty Trail. Savannah is a premier city for beauty with its moss-covered trees, and much history as the founding city of Modern Georgia. The Barrier Islands expose much opportunity for vacationers, whether desolate places or excellent resort and golf areas are sought. Historical lighthouses such as St. Simons Lighthouse and the Tybee Island Lighthouse make for satisfying tours. Kayaking is a popular water sport here. The Mountains region in North Georgia is a true study in nature and Appalachian living. The Sautee Nacoochee Center embraces Appalachian art and music with festivals and performances. Wine tourism is popular, with a solid choice of vineyards and wineries to visit. Rides on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway are a fun way to view 26 miles of the Blue Ridge and Cohutta Mountain ranges. Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a cottage in Warm Springs, where the hot springs were soothing; the “Little White House” is deemed a historic site. In Plains is the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and Boyhood Farm, but inside of the home is not open to the public. The Chattahoochee River runs ready for fishing, swimming, and relaxation. Try your hand at brick and tile making at the Global Village and Discovery Center, and view Habitat for Humanity homes from around the world.
