Travel Idaho Key Areas
Coeur d'Alene in Kootenai County in Northern Idaho, has a wonderful variety of recreational activities for the traveler all year long. During winter visitors enjoy great skiing and snowboarding in the Silver Mountains and snowmobiling and snowshoeing in the Coeur d'Alenes. At the center is Lake Coeur d'Alene where fishing, water-skiing, boating and kayaking are some of the activities enjoyed year-round. Hiking, biking, backpacking and whitewater rafting are also popular during the warmer months. Coeur d'Alene boasts a wonderful downtown area for shopping, arts and crafts, excellent restaurants, an amusement park and a five-star resort featuring a world-class golf course for those planning a golf vacation. Vacation rentals are available right on the lake with scenic views or nearby to any of the recreational areas.

In central Idaho, the premier vacation spot is Sun Valley in Ketchum. It has all the recreation of a top-notch ski resort and many extras. Besides skiing and snowboarding, winter visitors can enjoy a day of snowshoeing, ice-skating, or a sleigh ride pulled by horses to Trail Creek Cabin for a special dinner. During warmer seasons there's still plenty to do. Highlights include a spectacular golf course nestled in the mountain for a day of golf; mountain bikers have full use of the ski lifts to bring them and their bikes to the top of the mountain and enjoy the ride down; stables offer a fun day of horseback riding. The capital of Boise is the spot for visitors who want outdoor recreation paired with big city amenities. The dozens of museums, art and cultural centers, nature and wildlife centers make it easy for visitors to learn about the history of Idaho and about all of its natural beauty. It is conveniently located near vast outdoor recreational opportunities which makes it easy to experience the scenery while backpacking, biking, hiking, and touring around Boise. You can also enjoy shopping, fine restaurants, recreational outings and touring the capital building.

Other great places to visit in are Sandpoint, Idaho Falls, McCall, Salmon, Driggs and Twin Falls. Sandpoint, high in the panhandle of Northern Idaho, is on the north shore of the huge Lake Pend Oreille. Sandpoint features several artisan shops and art galleries, great restaurants and loads of activities on the lake itself.

Idaho Falls is beautifully situated on the Snake River near Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, Henry's Lake, Jackson Hole and many national forests. Many travelers spend a day here on their way to other vacation spots. Quaint McCall is located on Payette Lake near Brundage Mountain Ski Area and Tamarack Ski Resort. It is near to Ponderosa State Park and offers a beautiful 27-Hole Golf Course, is near to Hell's Canyon and Cascade Reservoir. Mountain biking, fly fishing, rodeos, horseback riding, big game hunting and snowmobiling are all local recreation.

As its name implies, Salmon, Idaho, is right on the Salmon River offering all of the recreation of the Idaho river towns. It is also a mecca for the Indian culture of the Sacajawea. Driggs, in Teton County, on the Wyoming border, calls itself "The Cultural Hub of the Universe." It offers Grand Targhee Ski & Summer Resort for year round recreation. Visitors are usually interested in exploring Teton Valley and the local scenic wonders.
