If it’s a real getaway you are seeking, head to Maine for the ultimate in outdoor activity and inactivity. Enjoy the nature, while drinking deeply from the history and culture of the area. Maine Fishing Maine is an extremely natural setting for fishing, with approximately 6000 lakes and ponds, miles upon miles or rivers, and the dominant Atlantic Ocean. There are many varieties of native fish in the Maine waters, including trout, salmon, black bass, and squaretail. Saltwater fishing provides challenging opportunities for striped bass, cod, pollock, haddock, and mackerel. Many fishing charters exist, and might even take you to sharks! Of course, great seafood days and nights are ahead, and lobster is abundant. Maine Key Areas Aroostook County is the largest and northernmost county in Maine, where 2,000 lakes, rivers, and streams await. This is a wonderful area for biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Agriculture, such as potatoes, is an important part of the area, in its history and today. Golf is another popular recreation in Aroostook County. Downeast & Acadia provides a historical and natural vacation. Enjoy Acadia National Park, where ocean shoreline meets with woodlands, lakes, and granite-topped mountains. Enjoy ocean activities such as whale and puffin watching, and seakayaking. Fresh lobster is a tempting part of the cuisine here. A number of historical museums dot this region. Greater Portland & Casco Bay have a successful marriage of metropolitan living to small town culture. Savor the flavor of brewery creations, such as Maine’s only year round Pilsner at the Casco Brewing Company. The Museum at Port Head Light details the history of the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Sightseeing cruises abound in this region. Experience the International Appalachian Trail here in Freeport. Shop in the historic Downtown district of Portland. The Kennebec & Moose River Valleys region is recognized as an outstanding area for outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, canoeing, bicycling, kayaking, hiking, and in the autumn, seeing beautiful fall foliage. Visit the Riverwalk Augusta, located along the Savannah River, and historic Fort Augusta. Travel down the scenic route 201, and you’ll drive by the Redington Museum, Margaret Chase Smith Library, and The Forks, known for whitewater rafting. Breathtaking scenery can be found in the Maine Lakes & Mountains region, where the four seasons really show their colors. Nordic and alpine skiing is a popular sport, especially at the famous Sugarloaf Mountain, and the lakes and rivers provide a wealth of outdoor recreation. Watch out for the neat wildlife in this region including moose and loons. Maine’s Mid-Coast region has a very typical Maine feel overall, while having its own history to contribute. The General Henry Knox Museum in Thomaston commemorates his life as a Revolutionary War general and politician at his home named Montpelier. Many bed and breakfast areas are historical places themselves. Artisans have looked to the coast for inspiration for their work, and you can visit artist’s studios and find a unique souvenir. Lobster boat cruises are also part of tourism in Rockland and Penobscot Bay. The Southern Maine Coast offers a relaxing getaway to which many people avail themselves. Golf courses, beaches, boutiques, hiking, and biking all have their place on the coast. The Brick Store Museum preserves the maritime history of the Kennebunks from early settlers to today, while the Seashore Trolley Museum gives rides on restored streetcars. Ogunquit and its Perkins Cove harbor especially attract fishing and pleasure boating, with a good dose of Village Center shopping and dining.. The Maine Highlands region has been a vacation area since the late 1800’s. Bangor is a distinctly different New England city in its dual nature of an exciting city and a doorway to so much nature. Bangor embraces the arts in both display and sale, and history such as the Cole Land Transportation Museum.
