Mississippi Local Information and Area Highlights |
For the nature lover, it’s the pine forests, rolling hills, and the banks of the Mississippi River. For the beach lover, it’s playing on the shores and in the water. For the history lover, it’s ancient trails and Civil War memorabilia. For the vacation lover, Mississippi keeps you entertained in so many ways, that you’ll want to book a Mississippi vacation rental. Mississippi Gaming Gaming and casinos in Mississippi are abundant, and have turned Mississippi into a high caliber tourist destination. The main regions for casinos and resorts are along the stretch of the Mississippi River, on the Gulf Coast, and even inland areas such as Philadelphia/Choctaw, featuring a full-service resort with many restaurants and two golf courses. Mississippi provides unlimited licensing for riverboat casinos, so plenty of choices exist for gambling on the river, but the riverboats must be permanently docked. Try your luck with Mississippi gaming! Mississippi Key Areas The Hills Region, Northern Mississippi sports a landscape of rolling hills, lush valleys, and lakes aplenty. Tupelo has a very strong affiliation with Elvis Presley- it was his birthplace- and recognizes him in the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum attraction, as well as a yearly festival of food and music dedicated to him. Corinth is deeply steeped in Civil War history, with the siege and Battle of the town in 1864. Oxford is a popular tourist destination, drawing in fans of the literary arts- notable locals being the likes of William Faulkner, John Grisham, and others- and having unique shops and restaurants. Look to Holly Springs for some classic antebellum architecture as well. True to its name, the Pine Region is laden with pine and hardwood forests, around farmlands. Aberdeen is a cultural and historic town, showing a “timeline” of Southern architecture around town, and also providing recreational campgrounds. The Natchez Trace Parkway reminds visitors of the ancient trail between Mississippi and central Tennessee, and recreation lovers can enjoy the road by foot, by horse, or by camping. Meridian commemorates the life of Jimmie Rodgers, known as “The Father of Country,” with a museum including his custom-made 1928 Martin 000-45 guitar. The Delta Region’s floods have produced high quality black soil that results in fertile farmland. This region is home to Blues Alley, and catfish. The Catfish Capital of the World is Belzoni’s claim to fame, where catfish production is high, and is a great local entrée. The Blues here reign as the contributions of B.B. King and Muddy Waters do, with festivals known the world over such as the Delta Blues and Heritage Festival. Great golf is available in this region: the Cottonwoods, designed by Hale Irwin, and the scenic River Bend Links come to mind. Gaming is very popular, and resorts like the one in Tunica offer top-level entertainment in a luxury atmosphere. Home of the “Playground of the South,” the Gulfport-Biloxi area of the Coastal Region offers a plethora of recreational opportunities. The 26 miles of sandy beaches and calm waters make a natural area for water sports, boating and yachting, jet skiing and aqua-cycling. More challenging surfing waters are found around the Gulf Islands National Seashore, which is a collection of remote islands, but other activities like fishing and swimming are done here as well. Golf and casinos are plentiful on the Gulf Coast. The Coastal Region also includes a northern area with a scent of pine along Highway 49; many small communities line the highway, and also the larger city of Hattiesburg with historic districts, and more. The Capital-River Region hosts Jackson, the capital city of Mississippi, historically a trading post area called LeFleur’s Bluff. Jackson is host to an internationally famous ballet competition, and a wide variety of ethnic cultures make dining choices very interesting. The Vicksburg National Military Park features life-sized exhibits and relics from the siege of Vicksburg, and you can take a 16-mile driving tour as well. Don’t miss the First Presbyterian Church steeple – it’s adorned with a gold hand pointing toward Heaven.
