Lake Erie, superior music and arts, history all around, and the unmistakable Midwestern friendliness are what you’ll find in abundance in Ohio. An Ohio vacation rental will bring you closer to the action, the nature, and/or the people.

Ohio Heritage

Ohio puts a strong emphasis on commemorating its long heritage, from prehistoric times through today. The heritage spans cultures and historical events: Amish, Appalachia, Native American, Civil War, the Underground Railroad, and United States Presidents. A remarkable number of Presidents have called Ohio their home. Living history and interpretations play a large role in presenting various parts of the heritage. Historic downtown areas provide further insight to the senses regarding what life was like centuries ago. While on an Ohio vacation, you are bound to run into Ohio heritage sometime during your trip, since it is so pervasive throughout the state.

Ohio Key Areas

Northeast Ohio really has its eyes wide open for the visual and performing arts. With places such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, and the Youngstown Playhouse, this region of Ohio is vibrant. Cleveland has a very active nightlife, with clubs, bars, and restaurants lining the Cuyahoga River. If football is to your liking, check out the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. For a perennially important and interesting topic, HealthSpace Cleveland is a museum dealing with people’s health and healthy living choices. The James A Garfield National Historic Site is located in Mentor. Akron is quite forward thinking with the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Northwest Ohio’s largest city is Toledo, home of Tony Packo’s Café, known for hot dogs, chili, pickles, and peppers. Toledo truly benefits from being on the south shore of Lake Erie; fishing, yachting, and boating are excellent. The Toldeo Museum of Art has an extremely wide time range for displays and exhibits, from ancient times to now. On South Bass Island is Put-in-Bay, a retreat area that has been called “Key West of the North,” with a myriad of fishing, boating, entertainment, and shopping. Visit the Aquatic Center in Put-in-Bay, run by the Ohio Department of National Resources, with fish exhibits and hands-on displays. In Sandusky, a world-famous amusement park called Cedar Point attracts thrill-seekers.

The Greater Columbus area is considered Central Ohio, where a little bit of everything combines to satisfy everyone. There’s an Early Television Museum featuring rare television sets. The Bruce Lee Legends of Martial Art Hall of Fame Museum, with a 5,000-piece collection, is in Reynoldsburg. The hottest performance artists strut their stuff at the Germain Amphitheater. Inniswood Metro Gardens’ botanical garden spreads over 120 acres in Westerville. For some fun in nature and on water, try the Hocking Hills Campground and Canoe Livery, where water trips can be from 2 hours to 3 days. Dining also has variety, with choices from Italian to Cajun to Ethiopian to Asian.

Southeast Ohio has a variety of attractions without the big city feel. The Smoke Rise Ranch in Glouster offers a real Western-style vacation opportunity, where you can experience a cattle drive, cow cutting, or one of the many horseback trails. Bordered by the Wayne National Forest, this ranch holds other opportunities on its 30.000 acres. Discover the Ohio Ceramic Center in Crooksville, focused on displaying pieces made in Ohio at places with clay deposits like Zanesville, Roseville, and Crooksville. Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Chillicothe gives tribute to the prehistoric Hopewell culture through artifacts, an interactive computer exhibit, burial mounds, and a nature trail.

Southwest Ohio calls visitors to places like Dayton and Cincinnati. Fly with the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, honoring the early air and space legends. The historic Oregon District is Dayton’s first neighborhood, with antique shopping and restaurants serving items like artichoke sandwiches and fresh fish, flown in daily. The Dayton Ballet company is the second oldest in the United States. A full complement of things to do in Cincinnati is punctuated by the Cincinnati Museum Center, complete with 3 museums, with an OMNIMAX theater. Cincinnati features a shopper’s delight in Hyde Park Square, where the shops and restaurants are placed around a square with a fountain.
