activities and attractions in Progreso Yucatan

* If you want a place full of tourists, restaurants, and other amenities just like the USA or Canada, Progreso is not the place to be. If you want the experience of authentic Mexican culture among friendly locals, Progreso is the place to be.
* Mostly Spanish is spoken here. (However you can get by easily with a Spanish phrase book) You will be immersed in a community of friendly, helpful, and serene people. The crime rate is very low for most of the Yucatan, as its roots are founded by the legacy of the peaceful Mayan culture.
* For a taste of home, you can travel to Merida, 30 minutes away, where you can find American food at restaurants like TGI Fridays, Chilis, Burger King, McDonalds, etc. You can also find Costco, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, and other familiar businesses.
* A golf course is only 20 minutes away or visit the city of Merida, Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, Uxmal, or the Loltun caves. Enjoy excursions into the mangrove swamps, or take a trip to see the flamingo colonies. You can swim in the cenote at Dzibilchaltun, only 15 minutes away.
* Progreso's beaches are safe and tranquil making them great for swimming. A nearby marina provides windsurfing and jet-ski rentals.
* Grocery stores, markets, pharmacies, and many restaurants are within easy walking distance. A car is not necessary, however driving a rented car in Mexico is easy and safe, and can make it much easier to get around. The house is one and a half blocks from the bus route, making it easy to ride around town. An air-conditioned bus to Merida leaves the bus terminal every 15 minutes for less
than $3 return.

traveler reviews for this progreso apartment rental

Oasis by the sea indeed.

Review submitted: May 3, 2013   Date of arrival: March 26, 2013

We spent many an afternoon lazing by the pool, plus the odd massage poolside organized by Joanne. We were totally looked after by Joanne & Chuck from the moment we arrived. In fact before that Joanne had answered questions by email about how to find the place, where to buy a local sim card for my phone and other helpful hints.
The apartment was great. Spacious, comfortable, well equipped and clean.
We spent over two weeks there and found it ideal as a base to explore the many Mayan ruins and natural attractions within an hour or two's drive.
I would recommend this apartment without hesitation.
Thank you Joanne and Chuck.

Perfect location perfect hosts

Review submitted: February 22, 2012   Date of arrival: February 1, 2012

This casita was authentic, safe, and comfortable. One block from the beach walk, or "Malecon," it was in the perfect location. Best of all, the Canadian owners/caretakers made the experience magnificent. Joanne was a great friend and hostess. In every way, her service exceeded my expectations. No matter when you arrive or leave, Joanne will be there to greet you. A first day trip to the market(the Bodega) helps make the transition there seamless. She even had a book of all the eating places and their quality, explanations of the do's and don'ts of the Yukatan, ways to tap into the services of the city, and "must see" sites.Something special happening in town-Joanne makes sure you know about it and how to participate. Top that off with free internet and Canadian cable tv and you have a special place to stay.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, sight seeing, tourists without a car
