about Scarborough

Scarborough, ME Accommodation Guide

This seaside settlement on the southern coast of Maine is a popular tourist destination, and presents visitors with a wide selection of great activities and excursions. The original inhabitants of the area were the Abenaki Indians, who knew it as Owascoag or "a place of much grass," due to the sprawling salt marshes that expand across Maine's Atlantic shoreline. The area's first European inhabitants established a trading post in 1630, though the land often faced duress from colonial skirmishes that took place before the American Revolutionary War. Around the mid-1700s the land was finally able to grow and prosper due to the emerging cattle and fishing industries.

Located about 20 miles east of the New Hampshire border, Scarborough vacation rentals enjoy varied atmospheric conditions typical of the New England area. Summers are warm and pleasant while winters bring chilly winds and freezing temperatures from the great lakes. Autumn is mostly mild, and brings with it a beautiful change in foliage, as trees explode in vivid scarlet, ochre, vermilion and sienna. Travelers to the area should pack light during the summer months, but be sure to bring a warm sweater or jacket to avoid the brisk air currents that pervade the area during other points of the year.

Local Attractions

  • The Jennie and Isaac E. Wiley Recreation Area is a beautiful stretch of land that allows guests the opportunity to lose themselves within the confines of a beautiful natural sanctuary. Outdoor enthusiasts should plan a day hike through the winding trails and gaze upon the pristine beauty of wooded groves, shallow ponds and the variety of wildlife that occupies the region. The recreation area is completely free and open to four-legged members of the family as well, so consider pet-friendly Scarborough rentals for your stay!
  • The Pleasant Hill Disc Golf Course is another great outdoor facility that has become increasingly popular over the past decade. Rates are moderately priced, which bodes well for budget-conscious travelers, and rental discs cost only one dollar. Whether you are a discgolf pro or a first time thrower, this course offers a challenging yet fair set of holes that meander through the untamed landscape of southern Maine.
  • If you're in the area from April to December, check out a horse race at the magnificent Scarborough Downs Harness Race Track. With more than 60 years of thrilling equestrian contests in the book, this race course is home to New England's fastest half mile track, and features some of the most powerful and majestic thoroughbreds you'll find in Maine. Whether you're interested in making some friendly wagers or are simply there to enjoy the beautiful horses, Scarborough Downs is sure to provide an exquisite day at the track.

Downtown Scarborough

  • If you have a need for speed, head over to Maine Indoor Karting, where you'll find the best go-kart racing in the state. This expansive facility features a fleet of Honda-powered, European racing karts that is sure to get your adrenaline pumping. Open racing sessions start with a quick safety orientation, then its on to the track where drivers go head-to-head on a lengthy indoor circuit. Both adults and children are welcome to engage in open sessions, though minors may only participate with the consent of a parent or legal guardian.
