Walloon Lake is a small hamlet that falls under Melrose Township in Charlevoix County, on the Lower Peninsula in the state of Michigan. Walloon Lake is perhaps best known as a retreat for Ernest Hemingway and his family — they spent summers there when he was growing up. The lake existed in the pre-glacial times as a river valley, which was re-shaped and deepened by glacial activity.  The 4,320-acre lake has a surface area of 7.3 square miles, a shoreline of 30 miles, is 9.2 miles at its longest point, from Mud Lake at the tip of the West Arm to the Foot, has a maximum depth of 100 feet, and is about 100 feet above the elevation of Little Traverse Bay which is one mile any. Young State Park is nearby, spanning over 560 acres, and is a mix of rolling terrain, lowlands, and cedar swamp. It has 240 modern campsites with electricity. Other activities available in the park are boating, fishing, and trails for hiking, jogging and nature study, as well as cross country skiing. Blueberry Forest Farm is also nearby, providing the opportunity to pick your own while enjoying the surroundings. The Call of the Wild & Bavarian Falls Park is a great family destination, where the wildlife museum features a wide variety of animals, habitats, and activities, including over 60 wildlife displays, the Wildlife Theater, and the Hands-on Learning Center. The park has an adventure golf course, and a 1/4 mile track for go-carting.
