The Absaroka-Beartooth wilderness possesses vast terrain contrasts: from mountain peaks to canyons. No trip to Montana is really complete without a visit to one of the National Parks and wilderness area. And no trip can be as memorable as one spent in a Montana vacation rental!

Montana Vacation Spots

If you're looking for vacation rentals, Montana has a wide range of destinations to choose from. Northeast Montana is Missouri River Country, where there is less traffic, noise and stress, making it a great getaway. The Lewis and Clark expedition spent 35 days in this region, and the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site commemorates the journey, as well as several communities along the Trail. Recreation in Missouri River Country includes superior big game and bird hunting, fishing, and with 1,500 miles of shoreline at Fort Peck, boating and camping are also popular. Try a tour at Fort Peck Paleontology and find remnants of a T-Rex Dinosaur, or stop at the nearby Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center for more.

Custer Country, in southeast Montana, brings a slice of history with everything it delivers. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the extremely famous battlefield of Custer’s Last Stand, with a visitor center and a museum. The Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, with the towns of Ashland and Lame Deer, has a wealth of culture to explore. Visit the dinosaur digs at Makoshika State Park and take in the pine and juniper-dotted badlands. The first of three wild horse ranges in the U.S. is located at Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range. Outdoor activities abound here with millions of acres of public lands.  Montana rental cabins are great for all traveler types!

Montana cabin rentals in North Central Montana, Russell Country, brings you to the land where prominent Western artist Charlie Russell created his masterpiece work. Today, the CM Russell Museum is a quite complete collection of Russell’s art and personal objects in a modern setting. The Hornaday-Smithsonian Bison Exhibit models have been used for national symbols, and are on display at the Museum of the Northern Great Plains and Montana Agricultural Center. Recreation here includes horseback riding and many outfitters from which to choose, as well as skiing, hiking, camping, fishing and boating. In South Central Montana is a portion of Yellowstone National Park and surrounding communities. Yellowstone has wonderful formations, geysers, and mud cauldrons known as bubbling paint pots, and three of the entrances to the park are in this region. The Crazy Mountains area is a haven for outdoor recreation, photography, and great drives. Outdoor fun in the Yellowstone area can be anything from a Western rodeo, to windsurfing, to driving at one of a number of great scenery golf courses. It's not too surprising that Montana rental cabins are preferred by nature buffs!

Northwest Montana vacation rentals are near Glacier National Park, where several National Historic Landmarks are located. About a million acres of the park are set aside to forests, meadows, and a wide variety of fauna. The trail system contains over 700 miles for exploration and is a hiker’s dream, with a perfectly constructed natural setting. Whitefish is a nationally recognized recreation area with year-round outdoor activities such as snowboarding and golf. Make sure to see the Tobacco Valley Historical Village in Eureka, including a log cabin and a caboose. Another log structure in Libby serves as the Heritage Museum, remembering the people of the area.

You’ll find some familiar names of areas in Southwest Montana, known as the Gold West. Butte is steeped in history. The Mai Wah recounts the lives of area Chinese miners, and the Berkeley Pit has a viewing stand for the largest open pit copper mine in the U.S. The Helena area has some appealing architecture; one of its examples is the Greek Renaissance-style State Capitol Building. It may not be your last chance on the Last Chance Tour Train, an hour ride through Helena.
