Glacier National Park is located in the northwestern region of the state of Montana. The park contains two mountain ranges, sometimes referred to as the southern extension of the Canadian Rockies. The park also has over 130 lakes, more than 1,100 different species of plants and hundreds of species of animals. This huge region, spread across 1,584 miles, has been referred to as the "Crown of the Continent Ecosystem," an expanse of protected land containing untouched wilderness with virtually all of the plants and animals which existed at the time when explorers first entered the region. Two threatened species of mammals, the grizzly bear and the Canadian lynx, are found in the park, as well as mountain goats, bighorn sheep, moose, elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, coyote, mountain lions, wolverine, badger, river otter, porcupine, mink, marten, bats, turtles, garter snakes and 260 species of birds. Fishing for some species is allowed in the park, including cutthroat trout, northern pike, mountain whitefish, Kokanee salmon and grayling. Going-to-the-Sun Road, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, runs through the center of the park and crosses the Continental Divide, allowing visitors amazing views of the rugged Lewis and Livingston mountain ranges, as well as forests, alpine tundra, and waterfalls. One of the tallest waterfalls is Bird Woman Falls, which drops 492 feet from a hanging valley beneath the north slope of Mount Oberlin. The rocks in Glacier National Park are the best preserved sedimentary rocks in the world, and have proved to be some of the world's most fruitful sources for records of early life, including six fossilized species of Stromatolite, which were early organisms consisting of blue-green algae that have been dated at about 1 billion years old. Glacier National Park Vacation Rentals are available and diverse and are the best way to get Glacier National Park Deals.
