Mesa's mountain paradise
Colorado National Monument, a national park 30 minutes west from Mesa's main town of Grand Junction, has steep-walled red-rock canyons, giant rock formations and desert plateaus of scrub and juniper and pine forests. Grand Mesa National Forest, meanwhile, has scenic byways and miles of breathtaking mountain trails. The sparkling lakes, streams and craggy creeks offer great fishing for rainbows, brooks and cutthroats. The wildlife spotting is wonderful too: among the animals that call Grand Mesa home are moose, mule deer, elks, black bears and marmots.

The nearest airport is in Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT), located 21.1 mi (34 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that works for your travel itinerary, you might consider flying into Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which is 47.8 mi (76.9 km) away.
