about Olympia

Olympia, WA Accommodation Guide

The lower half of the Puget Sound has a number of stately towns, yet the capital of Washington state is a true gem. Olympia has long been a space for far more than government officials - the city has been a music destination since the 1990s, is in close proximity to a number of the state's most precious natural spaces and is known for its progressive residents.

Olympia is home to approximately 48,000 residents and was originally a popular saltwater harvesting area for the Coastal Salish tribes and known by many for its tasty shellfish and abundance of salmon. While there continues to be plenty of great oyster and clam digging spots in and around the area, the city today is known for its harmonious mix of rural and urban beauty. No wonder Olympia vacation rentals have such draw!

Top Attractions

  • Located about 13 miles from the city's central corridor, the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge offers the perfect place to see Pacific Northwest wildlife in its native habitat. The refuge specializes in its development of habitats for migratory birds, as more than 200 species of raptors, song birds and sea birds all make their homes in and along the beaches and estuaries found here. In the restored marshes, keep your eyes peeled for local beavers and mink, and watch the open grasslands (yes, there are some remnant grasslands here) for coyote and deer.
  • The shores of Olympia are one of its most underrated features - with great views of the Olympic Mountains coupled with softly crashing waves, this is a great city for moonlit or sunrise walks. Head to Percival Landing Boardwalk to enjoy the vistas as well as a number of boutique shops and eateries. Olympia beach houses will get you close to all these great views.

Downtown Olympia

  • After you've visited the Legislative building, head to some of the city's often overlooked haunts to see where the locals like to hang their hats and paint their passions - literally.
  • Salmon are the unofficial mascot of Washington state, so it only makes sense that Olympia would be peppered with salmon sculptures that have been designed by local artists. As you meander through 4th Avenue or stroll up Plum Street, keep your eyes open for these striking pieces of public art. Need a place to rest? A number of the city's benches also feature local artwork.
  • Olympia has been known for its music scene since the mid-1970s, having produced bands such as Sleater-Kinney, Kimya Dawson and the early work of Kurt Cobain. Today, you can head to the city to hear some up-and-coming artists at venues like The Brotherhood Lounge and the Eastside Club Tavern.
  • Olympia area agriculturalists are more than happy to share their produce with visitors, so if you're visiting between the months of April and October, head to the Olympia Farmers Market. As one of the largest in the state, the market sells varieties of berries, mushrooms, root vegetables, leafy greens and herbs that are always fresh. Several vendors also sell plants, so you can take a sapling home with you!
