  • Mini private nature reserve for the price of a hotel? Yes, please!

For the price of a hotel, we had the fun and unique opportunity to try out an Airstream trailer instead. More importantly, we basically had the equivalent of a private nature preserve with Colorado River frontage all to ourselves. This place is also used as a special event venue at times, which I’m sure is a great choice. However, to think of sharing it with tens of friends/family/coworkers for a higher price vs. having the place to ourselves for a very affordable price was so special! During our stay at the property, we saw deer, a million variously colored dragonflies and minnows, an eagle, several great blue herons, egrets, bats, a muskrat, etc. Very best of all were the amazing bullfrogs in the pond. They squeak like a mouse and vanish on approach but, later in the evening, their low pitched chorus sounds like distant cattle, by contrast. By day, you can see orchards, a white picket fence, and a gazebo on the clifftop across the Colorado River. Through a little investigation and driving, we found out it was High Country Orchards. It is free to visit the orchard, and an enjoyable walk through it will lead you to the gazebo, which has phenomenal views of the Palisade area, not least of all the entire property the Airstream is on and the Airstream itself. Good photo op! But hey, you can already see Mount Garfield out the bedroom window of the Airstream, so you can feel free to laze around instead. You can see constellations and the milky way stretch out over the property at night. Clay was an enthusiastic and helpful host, whose thoughtful touches such as the local, fresh peaches and handwritten thank you note on arrival were very kind. There is even a little row boat you can take out on the lake! We greatly enjoyed our stay.

We loved this place! It is a little outside of Palisade and right on the fruit and wine byway. We biked into town, stopped at a lavender farm, orchards and wineries along the way then ubered back to the house at the end of the day. Karina left us farm fresh eggs in the refrigerator and freshly picked peaches from the neighboring peach orchard on the counter. She was so responsive and willing to help with recommendations, etc. We were able to have a view of the peach orchard while showering, LOVED playing with the alpacas, and really enjoyed the home overall. Everything was up to date and clean and Karina did a wonderful decorating and having homey touches in the rental. Could not recommend this place more!
