I'm so happy I booked this house. Everything about it made our holiday one to remember, and we're already talking about going back! The owner Helen provided lots of details before our visit, which was very reassuring. It was our first visit to the area, family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids 8-12-14), staying one week/early June, we wanted a relaxing holiday with activities to keep both kids and adults happy - and thats what we got! Highlights for the house:
1- The secret garden and pool - enclosed garden, with no other houses overlooking, sun all day but also shade, several seating areas, BBQ, beautiful plants - and fantastic deep swimming pool!
2 - Beautiful 400 yr old stone house, newly renovated with a well thought out layout; great having 2 living rooms (one upstairs, one down stairs with tv and a range of old style dvds!). Great that linen was provided. Very good internet-wifi :-)
3 - Location! Quiet, small old stoned-house village, with narrow cobbled streets to explore. Easy 40 min drive from the airport, within 30-45 min drive of many daytrips (St Guilhem for the swimming/beach/caves/village, Roquebrun for canoeing, wine tasting at Ollier Taillefer/Fos, Pezanas - the old town, Lac du Salagou for boating /swimming, Cirque de Moureze for a short hike with 'moon' landscape, Gorge d'Heric - hike/swim, just stunning! We didn't have time for the beach - but heard it was lovely. Easy parking in the car park near the house. Supermarkets 15 min away in Roujan (best) and Bedarieux. Amazing boulangeri 10 min walk from house (though closed the week we were there!) Also a beautiful walk, 45min, from the house up the hill to the Moulins (windmills).
4- Helen the owner! Answered all our questions and gave lots of tips on what to do. Lives next door, but very discreet.
I can't think of anything negative to say! So, just to decide when we can go back....
I really wanted to give this lovely French farmhouse a 5/5, but unfortunately I can’t yet.
The house itself is the perfect representation of that fantasy farmhouse in Europe. The setting in a working vineyard is spectacular and Celine the owner is super sweet and helpful. However; there are a number of areas that need attention for this to become the dream vacation rental:
Sheets, comforters, towels and pool towels need to be supplied as part of the rental. Coming from the US or Canada no one wants to give up luggage space to linens.
The house needs a very thorough clean. Ceilings, picture frames, furniture. The space is big, and obviously old, so dust and cobwebs aren’t a surprise but a heavy duty cleaning before each rental would be appreciated
The pool wasn’t clean on arrival and it took several days before it was useable
The wireless was really slow and unpredictable
Celine needs to put together some sort of handbook for the house with information about things like how the wifi works, where and when to put out garbage, how check in and check out is going to work etc.
Some kitchen basics: salt, pepper, sugar, oil, vinegar, washing up liquid would be a plus. Most places supply the basics and leave items left by guests (spices, oils, sauces) for the next guests to use.
Despite the constructive criticism we would rent here again. Celine really was lovely and took comments and concerns seriously and the house is lovely, spacious, cool and comfortable and well situated for exploring the area.
