  • For our first time in Europe, this was a beautiful place to try it out!

I had business in Dillenburg, and was told to stay in Herborn. I had trouble finding a hotel, so I thought I'd check VRBO. I found this lovely house right in the heart of it all. I was able to bring my wife on this trip, as our anniversary was during the same week. Sonja was nice enough to meet us at the house and show us around. She left us a bottle of wine, fresh berries and chocolates around the house. I had to work everyday, but my wife was able to walk around Herborn and see the sights and shop and eat in the many stores that the town has to offer. Herborn is a neat town. It doesn't have much going on after 7pm, but there are a few bars open, and a Bistro about 60 feet from the front door of the house. About the house, I wasn't quite sure what to expect when we arrived. I think Sonja said the house was about 450 years old. It had really cool architecture. Everything is up. The ground level has a flight of stairs up to the first floor, which houses the kitchen and half bath. The kitchen was very nice, and she has several amenities for you to use such as coffee grinder, maker, toaster, fridge, stove. Go up a spiral staircase to the next floor, and you're in the Living Room. Beautifully decorated, with a TV. Next floor, a parlor room and the main bathroom. The bathroom was very nice. The tub didn't have much hot water coming from the spray nozzle, but the faucet did. The shower is lovely, but there isn't a shower curtain, so you have to be careful not to get water all over a wood cabinet she has sitting next to it. I placed a towel over it to keep it safe, and showered in the corner of the shower. Not really sure why it is like that, but it is still very nice nonetheless. The last and highest floor is the bedroom. It has the beautiful king bed there. I must warn you, if you can't handle stairs because you're elderly or clumsy, don't rent this. This has more stairs than you could handle. The stairs spiral around on a few floors, so the stairs are wider on the outside and shallow on the inside. The stairs going up to the bedroom are very steep. If you have good footing and are careful, no problem. My wife tried going down them in socks, and she fell down a flight of stairs. That was the only negative we had, but it caught her by surprise, so what do you do. Overall, we really enjoyed our trip to Europe, and I would stay here again. I hope to be back sometime in the near future! Thanks again!!!

  • Large, very clean, nice - friendly host

We stayed in this apartment located in Altenkirchen near Hohenahr for 10 days and really enjoyed our time there. The apartment was large, very clean, and nicely decorated. The bathroom is big (though no tub only very small shower) and there are two nice, large bedrooms with comfy beds. While the apartment fronts the road through the town, traffic was minimal and since we sleep with a small fan that was not a problem for us. The kitchen has all the necessary supplies for cooking if you cook. We used the outdoor grill (more like an electric griddle) twice for cooking which was a nice bonus for cooking options. There is a cover over the section of driveway that has the outdoor seating are so if it is raining, as it was one time, it is not a problem. Also, having use of a washing machine came in handy since we stayed longer than a week and needed to wash clothes. We took walks through the countryside and there were very beautiful views. There are not any stores or bakeries in this small town, but nearby villages are just a short drive away and offers all those things. Internet was sometimes “down” (less than 10% of the time), but that is expected in remote villages such as this. Off road parking is in the driveway, just 5-6 steps from the apartment (which was on the ground floor). It was nice that Michael (our host) lived on the property and could answer any questions or concerns we might have had, though we had none as every detail was taken care of. We recommend this lovely place!
