  • Nice house, great for families

Thank you so much for sharing your vacation home with us! We loved every minute of our stay there. Nice view of Lake Balaton and surrounding hills. We enjoyed the heated pool even though the weather wasn't really summery.. the lake was too cold to swim in it. The house is well equipped and supplied. It is nicely maintained and very clean. Thank you also for being flexible for us! We would like to use it again in the future.

  • A lovely rustic getaway--with some warnings!
    4 of 5

If you're looking for a comfortable yet rustic hideaway with lots of bike-riding opportunities, this is the place! In a small village some 10 km from Lake Balaton, the house is about 200 meters from a funky little train that can take you to the lake (if you can figure out its rather infrequent times). No road leads directly to the lake, but there are long bike paths if you are keen cyclists, and the woods around are beautiful. In the summer months, the place would be ideal--away from the crowds at the lake, and with a wonderful back garden for relaxation. The kitchen is well-equipped, and the two beds are quite comfortable. Here are the warnings for English speakers, and especially for those coming from far away: the property, which is owned by a German family, is really geared for European visitors who are arriving by car with all their gear, and who will stay for their usual two-week summer holiday. This is why: 1) payment must be made by bank transfer. This is a common payment method in European countries, but American and Australian banks charge an enormous fee to exepedite this kind of payment. 2) the owner requires that you bring your own bed linens and towels, something that we did not know until after we had booked the place. Since we were coming by flight from the U.S., this caused some difficulties for us, and had to find friends who would loan us some. The owner also does not provide a flash light, which is also something we don't usually bring with us on international flights. 3) THERE ARE NO LAUNDROMATS ANYWHERE IN HUNGARY! Despite what the description states on this HomeAway site, you will have no facilities for washing those sheets or anything else, since there is no washing machine in the house. 4) Here's the most important warning: if you are there when the weather is cool, you will want to make a fire in the wooden stove. Be sure to get clarification with the owner if you will be charged for wood usage, and at what rate. This led to some grief with the owner, and we left early because of it. All that being said, it is quiet and made for outdoorsy types who don't mind 10-km bike rides to the lake or shops! A car, though, is really a must if you want to go anywhere in the area. And it's a fascinating area.
