This old house set in luxuriant gardens, with a spectacular outdoor terrace with dipping pool and outdoor kitchen, is an extremely peaceful place to enjoy the beauty of the island and the extraordinary setting of Pollara. The house is well-equipped, with an abundance of cooking utensils, plates, glasses, etc., a large good shower room, etc. Like any old house it has some minor issues- the screens (an unusual feature, and a blessing, in Italy) are a bit old and heavy, the house smells a bit musty, which we were told is common to all the houses in this often damp maritime location, and there is no air-conditioning (here or probably anywhere on Salina). We were there during unusual heat for the month of June, so we found the small pool a godsend. The swimming in the little bay of Pollara is beautiful, though it's a hot walk back up. Three cats left by some previous visitors roam around when they are hungry. We did not know about this and would have appreciated a heads-up, since we couldn't find the cat food until the second day. Guests should be prepared to bring everything. When we requested some dishwasher soap and detergent the manager quickly had some brought to us but did say that this was not usually part of the service provided, which we found rather surprising, especially given the remoteness of the location. Apart from these minor quirks, La Vigna is as fantastically peaceful as it looks from the photos, and a stunningly beautiful place to spend a relaxing week on one of the world's most beautiful islands.
Thank you Marissa and Ricardo for being such good hosts. We were afraid the place would be too hot, but it stayed nice and cool without air conditioning in mid-June. We had everything we needed and intend to return.
