Had a very pleasant stay. Lots of space at the property for our group of 4 (there are beds to accommodate a much larger group--three main bedroom areas with several beds in each, plus three toilets and three showers, so definitely works for larger groups, too), and a lot of time has spent on cultivating the surrounding grounds into a beautiful garden space. Property is in a quiet little village.
Anneke was a very pleasant hostess and made sure we were comfortable and well taken care of--even made sure to let our young son help feed some of her chickens and had lots of advice for things to see locally. A very genuine and warm person. The hosts live at an adjoining property so are never far away if you happen to need anything.
We used the property as a base to explore Leeuwarden, Gronigen, and Moddergat, and took some easy day trips to see Geithoorn and the hunebedden in Drenthe. Would be nice to actually just spend more time relaxing at the property in the ample gardens on a return visit. Would also work as a great base for some day trips to the nearby islands (we didn't have time in our schedule for that, unfortunately).
Nearest village with restaurants/provisions is Dokkum, which is itself fairly small, but the property has lots of dishes and pans such that it would be possible to buy groceries in Dokkum and then just cook at the property (we opted to mostly just eat at the few establishments in Dokkum, though be advised that many are closed on Sunday and Monday, and some even closed Tuesday as well).
Overall, we definitely enjoyed our stay and would recommend these accommodations for anyone visiting the area. Thanks again, Anneke!
Welmoed is very welcoming, friendly. It was a little like staying at a friends home. Everything we needed was there. We spent a lot of time around the
kitchen table in the evenings. Holward is pretty central to a lot of sights. Well
worth staying in a small village by the sea.
