  • Owl's Head Island Retreat
    4 of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Owls Head but there were a few gliches. There were 9 family members for 1 of the weeks and the house handled all of us very well. The area surrounding the house was a bit restrictive for the 3 grandkids (ages 10, 8 & 6) with a barrier put up on the main deck closing off the steps that go down to the rocks & water; as well, there as poison ivy on the edge of the lot stopping them from venturing further. We also had a problem with a tap in the master bedroom ensuite and a strong ordour from the septic tank on 2 nights while sitting outside on the deck enjoying the beautiful night view. All of us being very familiar with well & septic systems at our own homes, certainly alerted us but didn't halt our time at this vacation property. The problems were reported to the property manager. Upon arrival we discovered a For Sale sign on the lawn which we were not made aware of. The owner & manager were very understanding though when we refused any showings while we were occupying the house. The property was in a good location for touring further south along the coastline; or getting to the town of Hubbards (15 mins), airport (1 hr), Halifax and further on. We had a chance to do day tours to many different beautiful areas; and we discovered many different beaches close by and further on. We found the Swiss Air Interment Memorial very emotional; as well, we visited the Swiss Air Memorial close to Peggy's Cove. It gave you a true perspective of the large area that was searched following the crash. The house was so bright when the sun was shining and had a beautiful ocean view. We were able to open all the windows to enjoy the gorgeous breezes inside; and wonderful decks to lounge on, barbecue and dine. We walked along the island's private road and enjoyed the small beach close by when the tide was both in & out. A great chance to explore the water's shore when the tide was out. A very pretty cove with boats moored in the middle while the unexpected castle created a picture perfect background. Nothing surpassed our enjoyment talking to local Nova Scotians wherever we were. They helped guide us to locations that were not visited by tourists; and what a thrill many of these areas were! Our adventures only scratched the surface of what Nova Scotia has to offer; and all (9) of the family want to return to continue this wonderful vacation again. Returning to Owls Head Island completed each day with a fire on and relaxing.

Cove's Mooring is the perfect destination for anyone who wants to just sit back, fish, enjoy the beauty of life on a cove. The house is situated across from the private dock where our family loved walking down to fish whenever they felt like it. We were there for Thanksgiving so the foliage was beautiful as well. The house itself is very modern, the kitchen and living room are the perfect combination of state of the art appliances, granite island, comfortable couches and a beautiful gas fireplace. The bedroom and alcove upstairs (perfect for another couple) and 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms on main floor. The French doors off the living area offer a stunning view of the cove. We had many nights around the campfire gazing at the stars and a meteor shower and lots of time to just unwind. Lunenburg is aprox. 25 minutes away and well worth the day trip as is Peggy's Cove, Mahone Bay and Halifax/Dartmouth (30-45 minutes away). Favourite restaurants were Gahan House in Halifax and Salt Shaker in Lunenberg. Fabulous home in an unbelieavable setting, we will be back!
