It was a family trip. There we were, 8 people from 4 generations all wanting to be together for the Holidays. The 6 bedroom, 3-story mountain home seemed a perfect match. Upon arrival, it was clear that in many ways, it was. Large, spacious rooms, most of which had their own bathrooms. Huge windows and glass doors which bathed each space with natural light. Archways which opened up sightlines to the pool and the rolling hills of Algarve from the kitchen. It was idyllic.
Amenities were plentiful as well. Automated shutters which rose and lowered at the push of a button. A television with a plentiful selection of family films. A pool table which was host to many a tournament. Comfortable King-sized beds and upstairs rooms connected by balcony space. And both and indoor and outdoor dining area which were impeccably clean.
But with so many amenities come some problems. First and foremost, the house operates on its own septic system, which for the entire duration of our stay, reeked its smell throughout the place. We could smell it form the minute we walked in the front door. In the basement, the stench meant one of our family had to move upstairs while we aired it out. It was inconvenient and at times disgusting, thought we were assured it would be fixed by Spring of 2018.
The heating system was a pain to figure out, and at times left some members of the house frigid while others were baking hot. There was no in-house wi-fi, which was an inconvenience for some of us who had to work, and may inconvenience others.
The stove, electric, was extremely low-heat, and while the touchscreen was a nice touch, it frequently got wet and difficult to use given its location near the burners of the stove.
Finally, we’d had the impression the house would be closer to the beach, but it was quite far. Although distantly visible, the coast was about a 25-minute drive away. The outdoor pool, while stunning to observe, was too cold to enter – but of course, it was winter.
But these problems, when weighed with the sheer beauty, cleanliness, and comfort of the home were easy to overlook. The 6-bedroom space is ideal for any large family, group of friends, or even couples and singles looking for a place where each person can have her own space to think or work or relax, while maintaining access to large spaces to share moments that matter. Highly recommended for anyone coming for pleasure, adventure, family gathering, or focused, offline work.
