  • Peace and quiet in a historic property in a lovely region of Spain
    5 of 5

I spent a month in the Casita Pio, half the time alone and the other half with my wife. I was looking for a comfortable, secluded, rural property that had authentic historic charm but was was close to a village and within reach of off the beaten track Spain. The Casita Pio hit all those marks. I spent hours in the lovely garden reading, drawing and, frankly, doing nothing. The view from the rear of the property is mesmerizing. The walking opportunities are endless. At night I experienced darkness and quiet (and sleep!) that I had not known since I was a child Other reviewers have mentioned nearby attractions (of which there are many). My favorites included Miravet (1000 year old castle), the cities of Reus and Tortosa (Modernist architecture, Tarragona (Roman coliseum), Morelo ( spectacular hill town, and the 6,000 flamingos in the Ebro River national park. The month of October had a few more rainy and cool days than I expected, but not enough to dampen my enthusiasm for my experience. The caretaker Paul was quick to respond to any request I made and a fascinating guy in his own right. His wife, Alex, one day surprised me with a large bottle of olive oil pressed from the fruit of their own trees. The Casita Pio is a historic country cottage so, of course, it doesn't have all the polish and amenities of a 4 Season Hotel. It is, however clean with a freshly finished interior, an inviting swimming pool, a very comfortable bed in the master bedroom, and plenty of hot water. I will never forget my stay there.

  • Gorgeous hikes steps from the house
    4 of 5

We only stayed a few days at the end of June 2018 and I wished we had been there longer! Jetlagged from our long flight from Canada, we quickly settled in the house. The bedrooms are bare but comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped and there are plenty of outdoor spots to sit and relax. We particularly loved the outdoor shower! It was quite hot when we were there, so keeping cool at night was a bit of a challenge, but the ceiling fans helped. Our favorite activity was to hike the GR92 in both directions, from the house. Unbelievable views of the coast, rich colors, and nearly nobody on the well marked trails. This was certainly the highlight of our stay! A little note to foreign travelers using a GPS from a rental car company... make sure the maps are up to date... ours were not and that added an hour to our trip. Our three days went by too fast!
