I can heartily recommend Caroline’s house. The house is terrific and Caroline was very welcoming and accommodating. Though she doesn’t live in Sweden, it was easy to get in touch with her and/or her housekeeper and her neighbor, who helped with the rental.
We had a wonderful stay at this property. It is a large, clean, welcoming stone house typical of Gotland, with plenty of room for a group or two families traveling together. The third floor has two large bedrooms, one with a double bed. On the second floor is a living room, furnished with comfortable sofas and a piano, which was a great place to relax in the long summer evenings. There are also two bedrooms with two twin beds each in them on this floor, as well as (at least) two more bedrooms, each with bunkbeds. There’s also one bathroom with a tub (with a handheld shower) on the second floor. On the first floor is a dining room, a half-bath, a shower, kitchen, a utility room and the washing machine. All the beds are comfortable and the windows are equipped with screens so you can have them open at night—we all slept very well! The eat-in kitchen is large and bright. It’s stocked with everything you might need.
We used the dining room once or twice when it was raining, but when the weather was nice we sat outside, either at the covered patio in the back or the small patio at the side of the house, which gets sun in the morning—perfect for our first cup of coffee. My son (12) loved reading in the hammock in the garden. The garden is quite private, enclosed in the back by a fantastic lilac hedge that was flowering when we were there in June.
When you stay at this house you’re surrounded by the lovely Gotland landscape with its fields and pastures. It is peaceful and quiet and not far from the beach. In the mornings we took walks along the country roads and during the day visited various wildlife sanctuaries for birdwatching or to visit old cultural sites, of which there are so many in Gotland. You have a choice of two villages nearby for groceries, banks, etc, though for much more than that, you’d drive in to Visby, which isn’t too far. We also took a boat to Stora Karlsö. We visited nearby artisans (including a woman whose pottery I’d bought 20 years before in Stockholm!) and a few local cafes, as well as many of the beautiful old churches you see everywhere. We hope to return soon!
