if you are looking to have a family reunion or maybe need a spot to jump off into the local Texas BBQ trails, this is the place. Tons of room. 12 miles from City Market in Luling. 17 miles from Blacks, Smittys, Kreuks, chisolm (and an HEB in both places to boot), its own smoke pit, great long views of the pasture in the day and great black starry skies at night. .
We took 6 guys on an outing there for a 3 day weekend (spent 2 nights) and had a wonderful time. The house itself is very clean, well noted by the owners as to dos and donts and how tos for various items (outdoor tv is a mirror from the main living room TV btw - the only tech hard thing we had to figure out). Water pressure/quality is great (you dont need to worry about that egg smell that some rural places might have). Concrete floors, huge eating table, big fridge, 4 bathrooms on the premises, great beds (2 per 3 rooms and one 4 bunk room for kids - all with TVS. )
We had a great time. The "only" negatives are two things you really cant do anything about. If youve been around Luling, you know what it is, but on windy days youre going to get a smell in the air. Its a heavy oilfield area (theres a pump behind the house) but its not intolerable. And when wind is blowing away, you dont pick it up as much,
The other one isnt a negative either. Its just that we didnt explore the down acreage corners of the land much, where it borders the Comal river. There are 2 jump in spots, though the water is still pretty murky from all the rain. In one corner is running water (shower/faucet), a grill, 2 picnic tables, and a walkway down to the gravel bed on the side of the river. Given a hot summer day, this would be where we would be hanging out.
Great wildlife, deer feeder brings em in to watch at night. And the head of cattle you might have to scoot along the road so you can get by up to the house. With three babies frolicking around in the AM during feeding, you just drink your coffee and enjoy.
Internet is hughesnet. Which is just fine for checking email. But if you bring kids and devices and everyone loves to stream, or trying to play fortnight or download some big DLC, its not happening. Get them outside and let them chase some fireflies, or pick out constellations, or setup a cornhole game and turn a ballgame on and grill on that working propane grill, or if you are dedicated, fire up that offset smoker and get your brisket on (bring your own mesquite!)
well worth the visit. Thank you!!
Marty and James’s Byrd’s Nest is a uniquely comfortable and welcoming countryside rental. Updated and attractive decor go hand in hand with charming anenities such as a private patio and wonderful outdoor shower. Wish we’d had more time to spend with resident animal and plant life and just enjoy the open, serene vistas. Owners are such nice owners/hosts!
