Wow. Walking into Shady Acres is like walking into a home design magazine. The decor is a sophisticated combination of old, like the wood used throughout, and new, like the huge TV and the black and white kitchen with its great big sink and warm wood countertops. The deck at the back of the house is a few feet from a wide creek. Sit and listen to the water flowing, and your cares seem to float away, too. The cabin feels somewhat remote from the world, which is just what we wanted. We found it to be the perfect home base for exploring Strawberry Reservoir, where we saw bright red Kokanee salmon and gorgeous fall foliage; Nine Mile Canyon, a drive rich with prehistoric rock art and scenic beauty; and Dinosaur National Monument, which also has rock art, not to mention dinosaur bones. The cabin is far from restaurants and grocery stores, so visitors should plan to be self-sufficient. There is a gas station several miles from the house that has basic supplies and a small cafe. ... If you do visit, be sure to drive a couple of miles down the road past the house. The scenery is amazing. ... By the way, the house has five bedrooms, so there is plenty of space for families or two or three couples. One bathroom on each floor; three bedrooms downstairs and two upstairs, including bunks for kids. Our group of two couples and two dogs had plenty of space to be together or just curl up with a book or a smartphone (OK, no smartphones for the dogs). An enthusiastic thumbs up from us.
