This place is totally amazing! Valerie and Brad are such kind and considerate hosts, and their charming little farm is straight out of a storybook! The drive to Gabe's Getaway is scenic and easy. We arrived in the evening and were greeted by the most handsome alpacas! The barn was decorated in lovely fall colors and holiday lights. The apartment is modest, clean, cosy and warm, with a little section for kids to read and learn about all the different animals who live on the farm. In the morning, we made coffee, provided by our hosts, and walked our two dogs around the grounds to meet the animals. The most delightful menagerie of animals came to greet us, including the two pigs, two baby goats, two sheep, two ducks and three horses. Our dogs were over the moon to meet so many new animals! Valerie and Brad came out to greet us and share a little history of their beautiful farm. They showed our kids how to feed the horses and even let them walk the alpacas, while Valerie taught us all about what makes alpacas so unique! We had a wonderful experience! (Thanks too, Valerie, for the tip about scheduling our JMU campus visit around the football game traffic! Super helpful!) We highly recommend this place!
We really enjoyed staying in this cabin. We go to Shenandoah every year and rent a different property. One thing I appreciated was the width of the stairs. Most places we stay have super narrow stairs and it is so easy to miss your footing. The beds are very comfortable, also the furniture. The shower is a little tricky trying to keep the shower curtains closed so as not to get the floor wet. The kitchen is small, but plenty of room to fix up meals. I would suggest a saucepan and fry pan that is not cast iron - I make a lot of soup and I did not have the right type of pan to make soup on those chilly days. Other than that everything we needed. Nice front porch with lots of seating. The property is beautiful, especially in the Fall with all the color, and the view of the mountain out the front window. Janis left us a beautiful welcome basket with muffins, cookies and fruit and a lovely welcome note. I also loved having the upstairs and downstairs thermostats operating individually. I like the living area warm, but the bedroom ice cold - so I could have the downstairs warm, but go up to sleep in the cold with lots of quilts to keep warm. There was plenty of bottled water, which was great for us because we are major water drinkers. It was nice to have the choice between the coffee maker and the Keurig - and there were pods ready for our use. It was so nice to have the little firestarter logs, but we had a difficult time keeping a fire lit. I think it was because the rain had caused the logs to become damp. Everything was clean and orderly, and items we needed easily at hand. We are in the middle of trying to sell our home, and just bought a new home and furnished it - and in between all that, my husband's mother passed away. So, it was a respite from all the craziness, and a lovely way to celebrate our 50th anniversary. We totally enjoyed our stay.
